They had enough budget for Liu Kang to summon the dragon once in each movie and boy did they make it count.
In hindsight the twin dragons are a not-so-subtle hint of MK1’s Fire God Liu Kang, who’s accompanied by twin dragons.

My headcanon is that Liu Kang’s powers are trauma-enhanced—he experiences trauma and grows stronger, which is pretty sad if we think about it. He got his arcana (yes I like the arcana thing and won’t pretend it never existed) and activated it at the same time by killing a human trafficker and his words implied something similar had happened to him before he was found by Bo Rai Cho. Liu’s track record was admittedly not very great since he lost to Bi Han and Kabal but after Kung Lao’s death—a trauma, he got powered up and deep-fried Kabal. Between the first and second film, he seemed to get stronger, winning against Kung Lao. Kung Lao’s second was another trauma, also another buff and he could go toe to toe with Shao Kahn—would have cooked him several times if Shao wasn’t cheating. Finally, the emotional trauma of killing Kung Lao and the physical trauma of getting impaled culminated in his ascension to godhood.
In short, trauma makes Liu Kang stronger.

Antis be out there screaming at the tops of their lungs how shipping liulao is bad because “cousins” (a hideous mistranslation) and Raiden called them “sons” 🤡 while Mehcad Brooks (Jax) names the liulao fight “Brokeback Kombat” and Ludi Lin calls it a “breakup fight” but also “a fight for love” and let’s not forget his post about “this rivalry is about to get heated”.

Does that sound stupid and ridiculous? Congrats, you are Raiden and that’s the logic antis use to attack shippers, calling them “weird” and “nefarious” and a variety of names while they are the ones weirdly hung up over a fictional, unproblematic ship.
Liulao as a ship is about as vanilla as a ship can get: no age gap, no power imbalance, no manipulation or other issues, just pure love, trust and a deliciously twisted fate. Star-crossed lovers, they may even be called.
So, if you hate this ship, go ahead and say so, and be done with it. No need to make up excuses just so you can feel morally superior when attacking the ship and its shippers.
And don’t get me started on the whole “cousin” mistranslation. It is tiring!
