Raashi Reviews: Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola

So recently I payed money to watch this movie on the big screen in Times Square. Do I regret it? Yea. Before I get into why, let’s fill you guys in. MkBkM starts off by introducing us to the best character in the movie, Mandola (Pankaj Kapoor). Harry Mandola is basically a rich dude living with a village of poor farmers. His king sized house speaks for his lifestyle while the villagers life in shacks that don't compare to a bathroom of the mansion. Mandola starts the movie completely wasted and accompanied by his employee, Matru (Imran Khan), whose only job is to keep Mandola sober (fail). Mandola has one daughter, Bijlee (Anushka Sharma), who is best described as a beautiful pagal dramatic spoiled princess (usko Meena Kumari complex hai). The movie shows the journey of Mandola, Matru, and Bijlee as they get sober, save the village, and marry the right guy respectively.

Highlight of the movie? Pankaj Kapoor. Easily. He is obviously a great actor and embodies every character flawlessly. I don't have any real complains about the other actors but I didn't think much of them.

So why do I regret paying for this movie? It had a couple laughs but not enough. Maybe it's because I'm a nineteen year old girl watching this in NYC but I just didn't laugh out loud enough. The dramatic aspects the movie were woven in pretty well and they didn't drag on however the plot did. Once I reached the intermission I was checking my phone to see how much longer the movie was. The movie could have been cut down by at least 30 minutes for one major reason: I didn't care for the characters. Mandola was the only character I was rooting for so when other people came on the screen I just wanted to skip to his parts to see how the story turned out.

As for songs...well...I only remember the title track. Yea. So that's that.

So over all I just wanted to see a movie today in theaters and for that reason I'm not totally beating myself up over it. For anyone looking for a Hindi movie to watch, I say find a different one for now...unless you get a free ticket. Then go for it. MkBkM is "time pass" but better when you have a remote in your hand. Btw I saw Imran Khan in person with the full beard about a year ago... now I understand why he needed it. I still don't like it though.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Review

It's the funniest movie I've seen in a long time. Bollywood's attempts at humor have always been crass, if you look at Housefull 2 and Bol Bachchan but this film was genuine humor. There's a lot of carefree jokes, and there is some edgy dark humor too, but it's entertaining.

Anushka Sharma finally innovated! Okay, so Bijlee was kind of a replica of all the spunky characters she's played so far, she was kinda like Bubbly from Badmaash Company. It's just that Anushka's never had any intense emotional stuff before, like she was kinda a whine in Rab Ne, but in Matru-you feel for her man. When she cries, you feel bad. When she gets drunk, you go breathless laughing.

IMRAN KHAN. He was so perfect as Matru! And this is coming from somebody who's not an Imran Khan fan. Matru looks really simple, yeah I'm just this law school graduate working for some rich douchey guy, but no, he's not. There are scenes where you actually feel scared by the look in his eyes.

But Pankaj Kapur stole the show. Harry Mandola is one of the most flawed characters I've ever seen. Like, he's not like Anjali's dad in K3G and he's not Amrish Puri from DDLJ. He's just this normal guy who's kinda pathetic because he has a problem with alcohol and who's also really mean because he wants to build big industries. He's like a replicate of every capitalist jerk lol, but he has a soft heart(of course).

And Shabana Azmi and Arya Babbar were perfect as the scheming politician and her son! Especially Arya, he showed that the rich, smart handsome guy glorified by M&B's is actually just a loser who gets puppeted by his mom. Shabana and Pankaj had awesome chemistry!

So basically good acting by everybody, even the supporting cast.

  Negatives

The movie has this secret patriarchal undertone because even though Bijlee's a badass, she has to marry the guy her dad chooses. and the main villain is a powerful woman.And the movie glosses over Haryana's track record with women. I dont think VB intended it, but whatever. Also, Bijlee's exhibitionism is never justified. Like she comes out of the pond wearing shorts and she's all badass to Matru, but she never really speaks up after that. I mean, she calls Matru a MCP for questioning her, but she never shows that attitude to her loser fiance and her dad. Ermm, Vishal? Admit that you put that scene in to draw male audiences, not to give a feminist message. I'm not judging her character, I'm just saying it was a marketing gimmick.

The end was kinda weird. It lacked punch. There were a lot of anti-climatic scenes, and when the end comes, you're kinda disappointed.

Also, you might have trouble understanding dialogues because 50 percent of the time the characters are drunk, hehe.

And Ranveer Shorey's cameo was really not required.(Yes he's there!)

But overall, a good movie!! I'd give it a 7.5/10.
