I WANT TO HEAR YOUR CHANGELING HIVE SYSTEM PLEASE
OMG YIPPPIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEE !!! HAAHHA!!! Where to even BEGIN?! Behold:
And!!! For those unaware, I shall post more of them in my dedicated blog, @to-headmare-twilight !!!
I still haven't drawn a proper introduction page for poor Thorax, but I'm getting there! So far I have this drawing of his post-metamorphosis form compared to Chrysalis' post-metamorphosis form :D
The idea is that there are many Hive Queens in the world, and each one is basically a patron goddess. They specialize in a type of magic that's unique to them (a "cutie mark", per se) and pass on that trait to their subjects through a thing called the "Geas": a connection between Queen and Changeling that gives them access to the hivemind hosted by the Queen (essentially a mental group chat), the Queen's special ability, and the queen's looks.
Queens are the only ones who get to have two powers: their Hereditary Skill (that is, the skill they got from their birth mother) and their Developed Skill (the one unique to them!). Thorax, for example, has both Adaptability (hereditary) and Symbiosis (developed).
The average changeling can abandon one queen to join another—they exchange one Geas for another in a process called Metamorphosis: that's what we saw in Canon! Changelings abandoned Chrysalis' Geas to join Thorax's!
It's genuinely so fun to me. Each Hive has their own strengths and weaknesses, and that keeps the changeling politics running.
Oh yeah!! And Queens are the ones in charge of making Eggs! They reproduce asexually and can make a bunch of eggs so long as they have enough Love Energy stored.
Chrysalis' power is very enticing to the average changeling (the practical advantage of being as versatile as a subject of Chrysalis is INVALUABLE), and it is one of the major things that kept her Hive standing for so long. The problem is that her Skill is best fit for small-medium sized Hives. More subjects = more mouths to feed = bigger raids, bigger plans. Chrysalis HAS to attack large sources of love (such as Equestria) because smaller sources can't feed her Hive! Serving her is a big gamble, haha.
Thorax's Skill eliminates that issue entirely; being able to make their own food inside their shells means they don't need to go out and hunt (making him the PERFECT Queen for a large Hive). Plus, the stronger the bonds, the stronger the Love... That's good in theory, but in practice, it makes Thorax's hive look like a giant bucket of honey to the starving wasps that are the other Hives. Thorax's Changelings are incredibly frail, especially compared to Chrysalis', so they need to make alliances with other races to stay protected. Otherwise...
And then we get into the Other Hives™ and Swarms™.
Queen Coroptera is as strategic as she is cruel. She targets other Hives instead of other races, always during Brood Hatching season, because then there's a guaranteed supply of Love (grubs need to be fed, after all) AND it keeps her enemies down. Chrysalis had been able to keep her away, but Thorax is new and naive...
Queen Scara is a solitary Queen whose subjects came to her because they lacked other options; most of them are renegades, rejects or otherwise homeless changelings who clung to her for survival. She is perfectly content to live a solitary life, and avoids conflict entirely.
hihi i just found this blog and i adore it!!! may i ask what rainbow dash is up to? (plus, does she eventually get assigned someone to look after herself- and if so, who?)
Rainbow Dash and her INCREDIBLY NORMAL ward, Lightweight
Nothing to see here, folks! He's just a NORMAL kid who's staying with Rainbow Dash for his... studies. Of course.
?
I reread the rules and realized I did a whoopsies, so I'll ask again with an actual canon character .c. have you ever drawn a reformed changeling like this guy? (Cinnamon roll)
No worries :3 your character from the other ask is genuinely lovely btw!!
I have discussed some changeling lore from my little theory world before now, but I feel like it shows particularly nicely with Thorax! My changelings, particularly “royal” changelings, tend to be more draconic than equestrian ^^’ so I understand if this wasn’t quite what you were hoping for!
