Omg I went to try and get an autism diagnosis in my early 20s and hesitantly told my mum to ask if she thought I showed any traits in childhood and she was like "oh yeah, me and your dad thought you were autistic from the start, we just didn't want to get you tested because people would treat you badly" (people did treat me badly AND I didn't know what was "wrong" with me!!!!) what is up with parents deciding to just keep that info a secret?

So real omg ;w; I think what parents don’t realize when they do this is that other people not knowing you have autism doesn’t stop them from noticing autistic traits in the SLIGHTEST!

I still didn’t get along with other kids even when they didn’t know! It didn’t stop them at all from thinking I was weird! They just thought I was weird for no good reason- and so did I! For a long, long time. I thought my brain was just broken in a way I did not understand. Add the adhd and I was just a wreck.

Because I never learned about it from my parents I had to get my autism peer-reviewed by my friend group before the idea even crossed my mind. Me not knowing I have autism didn’t even stop other people from knowing I have autism LOL

I was very lucky that most people who knew were also kind to me before I learned- I know not everyone has that :(
