Final Touch (MLS CUP)
For so many year I was soaked into the american adaptation of what sports should be. This idea that there is no other sport on earth that could rival a football game or even a baseball game. And nothing against those sports at all, they’re great. There is simply something about watching a player, a team, fans grow before your eyes. It creates a since of belonging to something that will support no matter what. Fans grow out of belief of what they can physically see, magic before their eyes. Soccer does more than the average American sport offers, there is a sense of hope. Fans gather in a common fight to sing in the praises of their team. They know if the team does well, it’s in part because they sing and dance, drum and yell. Hoping that if they do their duty the team will do theirs as well. In the MLS 2016 post season every club has shown up and showed out. This entry is about the importance of feeding the beast (fan and team) especially in the Conference finals, so that the common goal is achieved, to fight no matter what for the MLS CUP. Four team stand out because they are still alive. The conference finals were truly a testament for a fight to the finish.
In the east it was a good ole’ fashioned face off. The Montreal Impact had to face the Toronto FC and it was an exciting series. First in Montreal, the game was in the Olympic stadium. Same stadium where Montreal took a strong stand into the Concacaf Finals. According to reports the fans broke the sound record for a game. Right away you have the feeling of belief that your team deserves to win this game. Montreal came out of the blocks pounding with speed. Oduro’s mind was on goal right away, with a slot goal in the 10’ minute. Then right after that Mancuso scored a goal in the 12’ minute and another in the 53rd. The crowd went wild and I mean just that. Toronto fans and team needed an answer, they got just that. Toronto then answered with a few goals of their own from Altidore and Bradley. Altidore’s goal was a beautiful snap header that just gave Toronto’s travelling fans life. Obviously the blue out weighing the red was many. But what they lacked in numbers they for sure picked up in spirit. Especially in response to Michael Bradley’s goal. It doesn’t end there. We travel on to Toronto were the supporting Red arose for glory. The original Canadian team(MLS wise) has been waiting for glory like such and they got it. Goal after goal after goal after goal, cheers after cheers. I don’t think a single person was in their seat the entire game. This game ended in a 5-2 route to Toronto and well deserved. Every Toronto goal was for the fans that night and that can not be argued. Passion was redefined by the supporters of this club, on November 30th. This was magic on and off the field. Toronto are moving on to face the giants of the west, Seattle Sounders FC.
In the west, fans have been the driving force to the success of every team. Seattle is definitely a testament to this comment. Again and again they show that they want to be heard, fan and team. The western conference finals didn’t change that fact, Seattle franchise is a fighting team. First leg, against Colorado Rapids, both teams came out very strong really giving a good name to strategic soccer tactics. The Colorado Rapids fought very well. For a team on the rise the big green machine seemed unstoppable, a result for the Green was inevitable. Colorado had made a name for themselves at home this season though. It was a toss up between the teams. Seattle Sounders where having none of that. Since Seattle’s inaugural season the Sounders have been fighting admirably for a place were they belong. After 8 years they’ve taking their rightful place, along side their loyal fans. But the fight was to be won in a game against a team that is very good at home and tricky on the road. With Colorado dealing with a few injuries, they were far from a result. With Morris’s poaching goal, Sounders were finally on their way to the, MLS Cup. During this glorious moment for them a lot of questions need to be answered. Ozzie Alonso is the driving force for this team and he picked up an injury. This can set them back in terms of organization and also fight. He is respected around the league, as a regular for the team and the rightful captain. What was also surprising was not having Clint, and doing well. Hard fought in the post season and well deserved, Seattle.
Honestly, no more needs to be said. This game will be one of the best games in MLS history. These two teams have fought to be where they are. Seattle has given us soccer magic over these past eight years. A good percentage of the electricity is based off of their fan base. Even when they lose the game, you want to be watching. It’s been pure entertainment. It has been the same in the east. In terms of fan base in Toronto, it is growing. Competition wise, it’s been a roller coaster, in a good way. You know that drop on the roller coaster that you can never be ready for but you still love it when it happens: eastern conference this year. The Reds have been riding that wave and as a rival it’s been exhilarating. Anytime Orlando gets to face them it makes me excited. On top of what has been done for success, fans, stadium and star players, Toronto FC’s look on and off the field, is what teams in the east envision their teams would model after. I don’t know about you but this a fairy tale MLS Cup. It’s bound to have many oohs and aahs. Please don’t miss out on history. There will be a first time winner, a deserving winner. We are at the end of the season but as you know soccer is never ending. I will be giving reports in the off season as well. Tune in to the MLS CUP, 8:00 pm ET tonight, Seattle Sounders FC VS. Toronto FC: Green Machine versus Big Red. The league is on the train to success, get on it’s worth it. Support your local team!!!
