What happened to Dipu Chandra Das wasn’t just a mob lynching but a full fledged collaborative effort between the police and the mobs. I just saw the CCTV footage of the police handing him over to the baying mobs. The news of instances of persecution and pogroms against Hindus in Bangladesh are often suppressed and those speaking about it are often gaslighted to think that nothing’s going on and everything’s perfect when in reality Hindus in Bangladesh cannot celebrate one festival without attacks and temple and pandal desecration. The lynching of Dipu Chandra Das isn’t a single such incident, last year a Hindu boy was accused of blasphemy and trashed the same way inside police custody. The situation of Hindus and other minorities as well as political targets is a serious concern in Bangladesh rn. What bothers me is that the mobs not only beat Dipu brutally but also dragged his corpse on the streets with literally children jumping on and hitting him long after he was dead as they hung him up, burned him and the crowd eagerly pulled out their mobile phones and recorded the entire thing! It was all so horrible and I cannot get the faces of his grieving family out of my head. Dipu was the sole breadwinner of his family. It is also important that we remember the genocide that took place in Bangladesh in 1971 and how it had exactly these anti hindu sentiments behind those killings and rapes that made 8 million Hindus migrate into India from a violence torn Bangladesh. Hateful crimes like these against humanity should be condemned everywhere.
