Favorite pre-capitalist class? (So no proletariat or bourgeoisie)
Hmmm interesting question. I'm not much knowledgeable on social hierarchies pre-capitalism, so I can't really give an educated answer. But a vibes based answer would be those merchants in maritime societies who didn't partake in the maritime economy directly but rather indirectly by being the ones to sell foods like salted fish or brined veggies to sailors, ship crews and traders setting up shop temporarily at those ports to sell goods from their own homes. A lot of foods here owe their origins to these people, albeit not all are historically attested to so idk how genuine most of those origin stories are. But they're cute stories.
And I get a wholesome feeling when I imagine their lives: You're setting up shop in the markets with fish you bought from the fishermen, and selling them back to them in more edible and longer-lasting forms before they set off to catch more fish. An Arab spice trader gets ready to haul the crates of cloves he just purchased from a Maluku trader back to Jeddah, but both of them stop by your stall first to fill their bellies with steamed rice and pickled carrots before setting off.
What about yours?
Love that we both just go for pure vibes. Mine is shepherders. Because sheep. Sheep. So cute. And they just vibe with them
