❛ it’s okay. you can let go. ❜ — seon & byul
" it's not okay, i'm not letting you go! ”
~~
water's always been calming for byul. besides her mother's warm embrace , the sound of waves crashing in the distant is what raised her and she's learned to make a friend out of the ocean.
so she pleads to it now , begs for it to not take away the one person she loves , loves more than life itself , quietly agrees to whatever the cost may be for the safety of her girl. her seon.
byul hangs on with every ounce of strength she has , hangs on by her fingernails while the other hand grips onto seon with no intention of letting go.
~~
ambush !!! was the last thing her co-captain yelled before all went to hell , an unwelcomed crew invading their home and putting everyone's life at risk , taking what's not theirs and killing who's not theirs too. the captain is running , she's running to the aid of anyone she sees desperately fighting for their life , her sword's out and bloodshed is inevitable. they should've known the kind of captain she was. they should've heard the stories of men who are rotting at the bottom of the ocean , men who dared to touch her family , her friends , her girl. her seon.
the captain yells , calls out for her as she drives her sword straight through the enemy , looks around and asks fellow crew if they’ve seen her. clarity on who the her is , no one asks. they know. they know very well of the one byul would get so worked up over , so unbelievably desperate to find... so hopelessly scared to lose.
an attempt at her life is marginally dodged , the culprit only managing the cut on her arm and not the slit against her throat that he was hoping for.. but she doesn’t care , doesn’t have the time to be scared because the frantic mind and the bleeding heart is already filled up with the thoughts of her girl. her seon.
hears her own name called out and in an instant , byul is sprinting , follows north to where the voice of the one she was looking for calls to her.. the tip of the ship , the narrow ground where the ship rocks the hardest.. waves , as though sensing the distress , start to panic too and cause the place they stand on to grow unstable. but byul is running to her , stumbling along the way , she’s running to ruin the man that’s currently dared to lay his hands on her girl.. he’s desperately trying to win the fight but seon has never , and will never go easy. she’s a fighter. she’s fierce and braver than byul could ever be. she’s has strength enough for two people.. she’s the one that keeps the captain going. there would be no byul without seon.
so she runs.
would’ve pierced straight through him , would’ve found peace in the violence because that’d mean that she’d be safe — but her sword’s not in her hand and she has no time to go back. so she lunges at him , arm around his throat showing no signs of holding back as byul pulls him away from the younger before a snap echos and his lifeless body hits the deck. she’s already forgotten about him and moves forward to hold seon in her arms , hugs her tightly and sighs relief for the first time since the ambush.
they don’t have much time to celebrate , byul’s already frantic again and tells her to go below deck , hide and wait until this is over.
seon would’ve never left her.
she’s so stubborn and the captain both loves and hates that about her because there’s no time to argue!! “ seon , please !! just go !!!! ” but it’s too late to do anything.
the ocean’s her friend but rain and her never saw eye to eye. thunderstorms echo above and winds become more violent by the second , people across the ship finding it difficult to keep their balance but they never stop fighting. someone else charges at the pair but byul manages to grab seon and step aside as they watch the man fall into the ocean , leaving cracks on the railing that inevitably break with one crashing wave.
after that , it’s not long before the two find themselves hanging off the side of the ship , the main deck slippery with water filling up and the ocean growing furious by the second. byul’s arms hurt from keeping them there and she calls the names of her crew-mates for help , reassures seon that it’s going to be okay and seon , of course , knows her captain inside out , sees the fear in her eyes and the panic in her voice.
“ it’s okay. you can let go. ”
she speaks so calmly , as if death wasn’t staring her in the face and it makes byul want to cry. she goes on telling her how her crew needs her , how she’s the captain and she’s important. the audacity seon has to think that she’s any less important , she’s way more crucial to the ship if anything. and byul was never going to let go.
the railing she held onto starts to crack , “ no no no no!!! ” god damn it she’s going to save seon if it’s the last thing she ever does. so she yells , pulls her up with every fibre of her being and as if the skies and seas agree with what she does , someone shows up , the ship’s navigator and dear friend reaches his hand out for seon — byul doesn’t miss the hesitation in her eyes , refusal to be saved first but there isn’t much time and the older nods , a little its okay as she slowly lets go of her once she’s safe.
now seon’s the one who’s frantic , yelling at the crew to pull the captain up but maybe... saving seon would really be the last thing she ever did. when the railing finally gives way and she falls into the beckoning water that’s asking to be paid for the cost she agreed on , byul just smiles , because at least she’s safe..
her girl. her seon.
