Fic Idea I’m working on right now:

Merlin gets gravely ill while visiting Ealdor, and a worried Arthur rides out to take care of him. While there, he has to give up the comforts of royal life for a longer period than before, but he finds that life in the village, especially with Merlin there, is actually quite nice. Merlin’s illness takes a turn for the worse and he offers to watch over him and give Hunith a break, but Merlin’s feverish nightmares reveal his magic in the night. Now that Arthur knows Merlin has magic, he feels he needs to protect him from the people in Ealdor who might find out, not realising that everyone probably already knows. he insists on watching over him at all hours, even when Merlin starts to get better and the nightmares end.

Not willing to go back to Camelot for a while, Arthur decides to stay there until Merlin is well enough to travel, which means missing his birthday celebrations, which he ends up enjoying much better when it is just him and Merlin. The night before they have to return to Camelot Merlin suddenly succumbs to the illness again, and the nightmare is the worst one yet…

Thinking about a Merthur wedding in Ealdor

Impromptu decorations, magical of course, the Ealdor kids making them flower crowns because they left the real ones at home. The day before, Arthur remembers he forgot to ask for Hunith’s blessing, has to sneak up to her house and avoid catching a glance of Merlin (bad luck, some rural superstition) and finally ask for her son’s hand in marriage. He doesn’t understand why she’s laughing, then explains that he’s the future King, then he gets it, and starts laughing as well.

All the attention on the morning of is on Merlin because that’s THEIR BOY. Their boy and he’s getting married oh my gods-

Arthur has to figure out a way to distract the guards that were sent to chaperone them for the whole day, they end up getting sent to work the field while all the farmers are ‘busy in the village’ and return at night wondering why the Prince looks like he’s been assaulted with flowers. But at least he didn’t get into any trouble while they were gone, right?

pressing question: in the series, is there a single merthur hug without at least one of them wearing armour? I haven’t rewatched the entire show but am writing a fic and need this information. If anyone has info you will be credited (if you want) in my fic notes !!

writing an adoption oneshot for my Patchwork Prince series, set post-merthur marriage.

An unknown woman dies in childbirth in Camelot and with no family left, Merlin hastily adopts her as his own ward. Arthur is still unsure about what he would be like as a father, caught up in the memories of his father’s failings, his absence, and his impossible standards.

The first time he wakes up to her crying, all of his fear and insecurity melts away as he feels an intense protection and love for this little child, now his child.

When she’s old enough to walk she runs all around the castle. There’s a chase in her feet that no lack of shoes can stop, and whenever the sound of juvenile laughter can be heard approaching Arthur and Merlin drop all of their courtly duties and chase her down. They never let her go without a kiss on each cheek, and soon everyone comes to see her as the Princess by her own right.

She’s four years old when they first take her to Ealdor.

She’s five when she first sneaks out at night, and there’s a search party through the night, but just before dawn, and before the whole troupe of Knights can be sent out to search for her, she finally shows up in the Castle kitchens, discovered by a very startled kitchen maid. Though they are relieved she was found, Arthur fears the wrath of the cook, who is now missing half a dozen fruit tarts. But she is merely sent the other half dozen for her lunch the next day.

She’s ten when she decides she wants to learn magic. Merlin is a terrible teacher, and Arthur can vouch for that. There is nobody in the Kingdom more fitting to teach her than someone who was a beginner herself. But Camelot can’t be missing two kings at once, and so Arthur agrees to go with her, and as long as he’s there he might as well learn the basics, right?

There’s a spell they’re both stuck on, and they keep each-other awake trying to figure it out. It remains a challenge until they finally try it together. They finally manage to make the flower bloom, and perform the same trick at the feast when they return. Soon, almost every noble in Camelot is looking for a tutor.

Once We’ve Braved the Storm, Then We Can Dance Again

Part 2/3 of The Patchwork prince Of Camelot (Sequel to Sunrise in Ealdor, Sunset in Camelot.)

Summary: A year after Merlin moved in to the Castle, he was still struggling to get accustomed to life at Arthur’s side. Things don’t necessarily get any easier when Uther suddenly dies, and thrust the whole of Camelot into an ill-prepared new reign. Arthur starts to realise this wasn’t what Merlin signed up for, and though he wants Merlin as King beside him, it might be harder than expected to get both Camelot, and Merlin, to agree on that idea.

(Or, Merlin and Arthur elope in Ealdor, Uther dies and they have to hide their marriage until Arthur figures out a way to get all of the Camelot nobles on board with decriminalising magic, and butter them up to their future co-monarch.)
