This happened in my subscription feed earlier. It's almost like Androgentics is back together.
wow who remembers this
I'm always surprised when I find out that what I take as common knowledge ... isn't. So, to expand on Em's lovely little video:
First, Em is completely right in saying media representation of the queer community is overwhelmingly dominated by white, (upper) middle class, gay men. You see this in Neil Patrick Harris hosting the Tony's 4 times. You see this in Modern Family and The New Normal. And yeah, you see it in RuPaul - he's very assimilationist. And here why that's a problem:
This cultural creation of the queer person as a gay (usu straight acting) white, middle class man has negative consequences in our political struggle. You see this in the things people choose to care about when it comes to queer struggles. Queer and trans people - esp. the poor and the people of color - have minimal access to quality health care, they are at greater risk to violence and sexual harrasment - esp in the military, they face unfair practices in the immigration system, they are at much greater risk to homelessness and poverty, etc... all of these things are systematically enforced. the only solution for these things that has gotten any attention has been marriage equality to allow health benefits to transfer to partners and baning Don't Ask Don't Tell. Yeah, these are improvements. But when queer efforts are dominated by these middle class values, the rest become ignored.
And even when we are focusing on something, the background noise gets ignored. I was in Minnesota while they were trying to pass they the marriage amendment. The primary organization for marriage equality - Minnesotans United for All Families - was incredibly erasive in their efforts. Every single tv ad they produced featured white, middle class, traditional, and STRAIGHT people. Without debating this tactic's political effectiveness, this is a clear example of the continued erasure of trans* people, people of color, and every other queer individual. Also, the human rights campaign has continually ignored trans* issues or actively sought to eliminate trans* people and trans* issues from their efforts.
So yeah, Em had a point.
