L8 Moclips 1957-1977
L8 was estimated to have been born around the year 1957. L66 Mata Hari was thought to be his mother. In 1970, he was pictured when the Southern Residents were rounded up by whale catchers for the entertainment industry. By that point though, L8 was already a sub-adult and he was released while seven of his pod mates were taken into captivity. L8 was an easy whale to identify. He had a slight bend at the top of his tall dorsal as well as a notch near the bottom. Researchers officially documented him on their first orca survey with the Southern Residents in 1976 when he was given the identifier “L8″.One year following the start of the orca survey, L8′s body washed ashore. A necropsy revealed that he has a bundle of fishing line in his stomach. His official cause of death was that he drowned after becoming entangled in a gillnet. Studies of his teeth revealed that killer whales have rings in the teeth much like trees have age rings. L8′s skeleton is on display to this day at The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor, Washington. He was given the name “Moclips” post mortem after the founding organization of The Whale Museum (the Moclips Cetological Society). As of 2008 with the death of L57 Faith, L8 Moclips entire family line is gone.
