The rules for whumptober already say that AI isn't allowed and that they won't reblog any work made by AI, what's different about this event?

The rules for the original Whumptober event do not disallow AI content. They have explicitly said that people can use AI if they want to, as they want everyone to have the ability to participate, even people who will use AI. They will just not reblog it. In our opinion, that in itself is reason enough for this event to exist. A lot of people were rightfully unsettled, uncomfortable, and felt unsafe with this policy. This event was made to explicitly disallow AI content. We have a strong stance against anything AI, as we stand with all creators. We want the creators to have a space where they feel safe participating. I hope that clears things up! — Mod Missy

How are you going to actively enforce the "disallowing"?

The main issue that a lot of people (including us) had with the original Whumptober event was not that they couldn’t check every submission. That is unrealistic, especially since multiple AI detection sites provides false positives and are inherently biased against non-native english speakers. The issue is that Whumptober refused to call AI what it is — art theft. And they proceeded to say that even if people are planning to use AI, they want everyone to participate, even people that are using tools that actively hurt other creators. We want this event to be a safe space for creators, and not a safe space for people who are using scraping tools and stealing other people’s content. It’s why we are so anti-AI, as well as why we’re advocating for glaze. It’s not just about what you can actively do, it’s also about what you’re standing for, allowing, and advocating.

calling it "ai-less whumptober" kind of makes it seem like a spite-based knockoff of whumptober. have you thought about calling it something different (octowhump, agonytober, whatever) and making it its own separate event that just happens to have different policies?

There are multiple versions of Whumptober everywhere. Whumptober is the event where characters of all kinds get whumped, during October! If this event being called AI-less Whumptober turns you away, that’s fine. But this is a safe space for people who wanted to participate in the main Whumptober event but felt unsafe and uncomfortable doing so. So, AI-less Whumptober. If people want to read it as spiteful, they can. But the intent is to make people feel safe here, not to care about the other event, and it seems like we’re achieving that goal. — Mod Missy

I want to thank you guys for what you are doing. Seeing whumptober mods try and erase all evidence of the discussion and specifically erase replies of people with valid criticism, especially disabled people speaking out against their ableism, leaves such a bad taste in my mouth.

sorry if this got sent twice i had some internet issues — for the total achievement does that exclude the alt prompts? if i post 31 fics for each day but use a couple alt prompts instead of the main list prompts would that still count?

Yes, it still counts! Posting a new work for a prompt every day in October regardless of if they’re main prompts or alternative prompts will count as the total achievement goal! — Mod Missy
