what do baby inkfish look like, generally? like, are they stuck in one form until they learn to change or is it an ability they have from birth? this blog is super interesting btw!!!
This is a really handy chart i see passed around quite often... though I want to point out that the sizes here a bit off, and the younger ones' sizes are increased to show detail. Pictured here, at the youngest stage, is an inkling of about 5 months. You can tell, because they've developed their eye mask, and the eyes have begun to open.
Freshly hatched inkling larvae (or Inklets) still have fused eyelids, and they're semi-translucent.
At about 4 months the eyelids start to darken and thicken, forming the mask; and at 5 months they're opening their eyes.
At 9 months, inklets usually begin to use their front two tentacles to begin exploring their world, grabbing things... and usually putting them into their mouth.
They don't have the ability to change form at birth- they permanently look like this larvae (or the image pictured above) until about 11-12 years old.
Learning to change form can happen before that- though around 6-7 is usually the earliest. And even then, they don't really control it well until 10-11.
At 14 they're usually masters of it, and can fully control their transformations.
