‘Allo, my dears! It’s Mod Sky comin’ atcha with a new style of reviewing!! This was actually sent in by our own lovely Mod Smiley, since we need our characters reviewing, too. It was before she became a mod, so don’t worry; no preferences here. Besides, knowing her irl gives me more chance to tease her ^^ Sorry dear <3
So, let’s do this~ Gonna be using the quotes style bc this is a longass bio and what did I expect from you tbf Mod Smiley u3u Fair warning that this’ll be a little less professional than usual since she’s one of our own, but I will be doing an actual review bc she deserves it~
Race: Half Japanese, Half English
Hair Colour: Dyed copper brown – his friends call him ginger!
Ok, so first off, I’m not big on Japanese culture so you’ll have to forgive me for any mistakes. Mod Smiley is well-known for doing her research, but let’s see if we can still pick Fubuki here apart a bit. Fubuki is a name that apparently means winter, or blizzard. Knowing our lovely mod, she likely searched that up and knew the name before using it. My question is, is it relevant? Because if it isn’t, I kinda like that. Too many people - myself included - do the “name means something relevant to the story” thing, and that’s… not usually how people name their kids, y’know?
Also, was he born in Japan, or England? Because the first and last names don’t seem to fit together? Fubuki being a Japanese name and Andrews being a very Westernized last name… does he have a Westernized first nme, or is that just an oversight? Idk. The physical features here look pretty standard, hurray for bi representatin too, but I’d expect nothing less from our lovely Mod Smiley <3
Physical Description: Fubuki is a tall teenager with wide shoulders and prominent muscular definition due to being an athlete. Standing at 5’10”, he is considerably taller than his classmates in Japan. His hair is floppy, with a side fringe, and hangs past his chin. Both of his ears are pierced once in the lobe, a silver stud rests in each one.
Lmao Mod Smiley, you gave your boi emo hair. But no, that seems fairly accurate for Japanese fashion, I’d say. He a strong boi, too. Even your chars go through the ~*edgy emo*~ stage in their teenage years, eh? Accurate. Relatable. Sine this is intentional, extra brownie points. I like chars that went through a cringe phase. We all did at some point. I never grew out of mine.
Least Favourite Food: Okra
Allergies: None – he is lucky because his sister inherited a shellfish allergy!
Dream: To travel the world and teach languages overseas
Favourite Song: Little Wonders
Standard trivia, he a sweet boi. Maybe a little stereotypical, but a lot of teenagers tend to be basic af. Even fictional ones.
Familial Relationships: Fubuki is the youngest in a family of four. His parents Akio and Jillian have been married for twenty five years. Fubuki has an older sister called Megumi, or as she was known in England, Meg, she is five years his senior.
In England, his Aunt, Monica and her husband, Louis, have two children, aged twelve and ten, Archie and Vonnie.
In Japan, his father’s sister Kimiko and her husband Goro, had one daughter called Shizuka, she was the same age as Fubuki. However, at age 11, Shizuka was killed in a hit and run accident on her way home from the beach with her friends. Fubuki and his immediate family had gone to Tomonoura to pay their respects to their fallen relative. Fubuki was particularly unnerved by the presence of her friends at the wake and was unsure of how to approach them and offer them his condolences, especially, since he was being given more attention and sympathy as a blood relative.
Right, fair. Drama, but not amazing huge life-changing drama. I like the whole thing about the wake, too. But if Fubuki was born in England, did he have a Westernized name like Meg? Surely he got made fun of in high school due to it. Teenagers suck, man. Also, I’m assuming Jillian is his mum and Akio is his dad? So why does he have such a Westernized last name?! I need answers, Mod Smiley!!
Brief Background Info: Fubuki was raised in London, England and at aged fifteen, he moved back to Tomonoura, where his father was from due to the loss of his sister’s only child, Shizuka, whom they had spent five years trying to conceive. Fubuki found himself enrolling in a local high school and meeting his soon to be best friend and later love interest Kaito
But… why? Why did he move to Japan four years after the incident? Surely it’d have made more sense to move him at age 11, when he’d just finished Primary school, than in the middle of Secondary school? How in the heck did he catch up? Had they already visited Japan a lot - if not, then why did he settle in so quickly?!
Friends: Back in England, Fubuki’s best friend was a girl called Katie, who lived next door, they were inseparable from the get go and remain in touch while Fubuki studies in Japan. Other than Katie, he was somewhat introverted due to being bullied. He became very socially anxious due to being the brunt of bullying and tended to close in on himself.
When he is in Japan, Fubuki befriends the shy Kaito, who happens to sit beside him in class. Fubuki realised that as he was at a new school he could be anyone he wanted to be, and went out of his way to engage the meek boy who sat beside him during breaks etc. He later ended up being very close with Kaito and some of his friends, Hinata and Shintaro; all of whom were being bullied by a boy in their class, Yuma.
I’d say being bullied is stereotypical, but as we’ve learnt, it’s sadly more common to be bullied in high school that it is to not be. I’m not going to do the usual warnings of “make sure it’s realistic” and “make sure the anxiety is true to life”, because this is you we’re talking about, and if you needed reference I’m pretty sure you could just take a glance at Squad. You’d get enough there to last you a lifetime.
Greatest Love: Fubuki loves adrenaline, so the sensation of his stomach dropping after hurling himself off a high rock into the ocean, or on a rollercoaster
Biggest Fear: Losing someone he comes to care about – he didn’t know Shizuka as well as he could have and envies the friends she had for actually knowing her
But… but, if he’s so shy… and has anxiety… just saying, yo, you wouldn’t see me jumping off a cliff. Although tbf, people deal with it in different ways, so, yeah, it is easier to be scared of something real than it is to be scared of something you know is irrational.
Biggest Regret: Not realising Kaito was at Shizuka’s funeral because they had both changed so much since then – and yelling at him, claiming he didn’t understand why he was so short with everyone on the anniversary of her passing
Why was Kaito at her funeral? Did he know her?
Biggest Pet Peeve: When people would mispronounce his name
Biggest Secret: He has a folded up tatty photograph of him and Shizuka from when they were ten years old – the last time he saw her. He keeps it under his pillow and hopes that her being so close to him lets her life force enter him
Lmao Mod Smiley pls reword that last part :’D I’m too ace for that shit.
Greatest Achievement: Punching Yuma in the face after he called him and Kaito f****ts after they got together
Greatest “Weakness”: His social anxiety and how he used to bail on hanging out with his classmates in Japan because he was so exhausted from playing up an extroverted façade during class.
Hobbies: Fubuki is an avid swimmer, and makes his way onto his school’s team with relative ease. He also enjoys studying languages and reading in other languages, as he is bi-lingual and aspires to learn even more languages. He also loves to dress up and dance.
Yes to the social anxiety thing!!! You could also make it that he gets snappy with people due to social exhaustion… like somebody I could mention… *coughBaecough*
Megumi didn’t move to Japan with Fubuki until she finished her degree, so when she would visit in the summer, he was adamant to show her everything he could.
Fubuki introduced Kaito to “emo” music and found it hilarious that Kaito adored Welcome To The Black Parade by MCR
Omg Megumi is adorable ;v; And lmao gotta get that MCR in there. Somebody take these boys to Mosh. But in all seriousness, as always, my lovely Mod Smiley, I applaud your research that’s gone into this. You’re a stickler for representation, and that’s always important when it comes to writing. Apart from my few questions and discrepancies, Fubuki is a well-rounded character imo. Much love <3
