orientalism refers to racism against nonwestern cultures or races, most commonly Asian & SWANA cultures. this includes but is not limited to caricatures, stereotypes, fetishism, portrayal of asians as 'exotic', and so on.

Have been told before that my traditional outfit was too provocative and sultry, and when I asked the person who said it to elaborate, they make a comment about how the brocrade and embroidery made it look like I was a belly dancer. Have nothing against the art, but I was fully covered. Even if I wasn't "modest", this was such a weird thing to say.

Sorry if I’m like. Not allowed to say this cause I’m not Asian but the “jokes” about “Asian parents” specifically making fun of strict authoritarian parenting styles seem a lot like orientalism… it also seems to mostly be made by people from East Asia (or white people repeating these “jokes”) and it makes me feel vastly uncomfortable? Like it’s- you shouldn’t be making light of what is often depicted in these jokes is child abuse.

And the fact that it’s phrased like Every Asian Parent is like that is… bizarre.. Asia is a BIG place full of lots of different cultures and types of people… not every Asian’s parenting style is gonna be the exact same??

I don’t know. I’m sorry if this ask is like,, worded poorly and sounds orientalist, I don’t mean to be but that’s no excuse.

Gonna make this post really quick because I know it's easy to get confused between the themes, but it's been happening more recently for some reason 😭 This blog and @this-is-orientalism are different, so we ask you to consider whether or not your ask is fit for the appropriate blog so your submission is in the "right place" and answered more efficiently. One is a "this-is" blog that is more focused on confession type submissions and another is a more of a general education blog that is meant to be more in-depth. They both work in tandem (and Mod Teto is highly involved with both), submissions will of course overlap, and we don't necessarily mind the posts being interchangeable, but I think people are mixing them up and it would just be nice for them to be posted where they are meant to be/nm

I know this has been discussed to a degree already, but relating to some other asks, the way people treat “yuri” like it’s some moral hallmark of femininity, and calling everything “yuri” is just… like they realize it’s just a Japanese genre right? It’s so far past it’s origins that it rubs me the wrong way considering most of the people screaming it are white.

Same can be said with “yaoi” but there’s at least an awareness of early internet “fujoshi” stuff that can taken as a joke.

Like take a step back from all this and realize that these are literally just Japanese media genres.

a fellow asian (i’m half chinese and half vietnamese), a chinese person, gave their friend some food made by her grandfather

the friend starting thanking mao zhedong

instead of the people who cooked it, who were maintaining the recipes, the culture (not the friend for sharing, nor the grandfather for cooking)

i called the friend out

basically brushed me off and ignored me (again, i’m chinese, the guy is NOT)

still think about it to this day

Recent Naveen discourse again. They're really quick to erase brown Asian rep by clinging to ambiguity and I can't help but feel racism there. Like Naveen is a pretty common South Asian name and the fact that his mom wears a saree is another indication.

If the writers say he's from a made-up place and ambiguous then why add those details I mentioned above? I feel like they only said that cause they don't wanna ruffle feathers. 🤷🏽‍♀️

not being able to exist as a japanese person without somebody breathing down my neck about the "asian experience" and how they "empathize with me and my struggles" (they are 2% filipino). which is not to say that i'm going to shit on their identity with whatever the fuck they wanna call themselves but i don't think you understand my experience as an eastern asian given that. you're literally a black person with a third removed quarter filipino great grandfather or whatever
