so apparently modular synth patch cables

were originally based on telephone switch boards

(you used to not be able to just call someone directly; you had to call an operator who would plug cables into a switch board to connect your phone to the one you were trying to connect to)

and now I’m imagining

what if there were a massive collaborative synthesizer network as vast as the telephone wire system of people patching in to connect to each other
