We don’t talk enough about how dangerous the way people perceive autistic people can be for us.

There’s currently a man on death row who was convicted for murder on confirmation bias and junk science (“shaken baby syndrome”, which is its own can of worms). But the reason he even became a suspect in the first place is because he is autistic, and when he took his child to the hospital, where she died, he didn’t act “like a grieving father should”.

Anything and everything you do as an autistic person can suddenly be subjected to intense external suspicion, for reasons you may or may not understand, or have any ability to avoid. Heaven forbid you stumble into a situation that is already deeply traumatic and terrifying, and then don’t do an elaborate social dance you didn’t know you were being tested on, and may not even know the steps to, much less have the energy to do because you’re already devoting all your energy to navigating the crisis.

This is obviously an extreme case. Most autistic people are not getting snatched up off the street and convicted of murder. But the same suspicion that led to that case is just the background radiation of being autistic, and it often does have profound social and psychological effects that either strip us of social safety nets or actively put us in danger.

As an autistic person you are navigating a world where you are treated as suspicious by default and have to actively perform every moment that you are around other people not to be suspected of whatever they fear.

It’s exhausting. And the fact it can go this terribly should be a wake up call.

the thing that upsets me most about the footage of Sen Scott Wiener being run out of the SF Trans march is nobody stood up for him.

you can see moments where they pass people who look up and see what’s happening but then just ignore it and go about their business.

there’s something viscerally terrifying about seeing masked people following a Jew to hurl abuse at him, and having to wonder if the next time I see footage like that, it won’t end with a rope and a tree.

one could hope if it escalated that far someone would finally do something, but I don’t have any confidence that they would.
