This is probably a little too much nuance, but whenever I see a "all borders are violence" post (a political position I generally agree with!) I always add a little asterisk that says "*but the border checks that keep you from bringing homegrown produce into big agricultural areas to avoid the transmission of parasites and invasive species are actually fine and if we were more vigilant about that kind of thing maybe we wouldn't have spotted lanternflies in the states."

Customs management (you do not want people importing a bunch of stuff that doesn't meet your country's safety standards, for example)

Things like that one lake in Europe where three national borders coincide and they built an island specifically so you can run between countries for fun

but sometimes we need to reckon with the fact that violence can come bottom up. it can come both ways. people are not immune to propaganda. sometimes you just can't trust your neighbors not to kill you and it doesn't really matter if they have an army or not because they outnumber you and may well kill you at the first chance they get. anarchism has issues with violence that comes from the people, violence that state functions may inhibit. how do you cope with the fact that sometimes people want to commit genocide even without a state to egg them on? how do you handle that? is your solution to just assume everyone magically starts getting along in the absence of a state? what happens when your would-be-killers vastly outnumber you? what happens when the system we have, for all its flaws, does slightly disincentivize them from killing you?

I’m 99% certain this is not what Gogol Bordello meant when they sang “borders are scars on the face of planet”, but I’m a fan of the metaphor, because scars are not necessarily themselves violence, but they are evidence of it. That violence could be from within or it could be from without, it’s not necessarily the one imposing the border who is always in the wrong.

In fact, to follow the metaphor, scars are the result of your body defending and repairing itself from damage. They may be ugly and they should be avoided if possible, but they’re as much a result of healthy processes as the violence inflicted on the body.

In an ideal world we wouldn’t need borders, or they could at least be soft and open boundaries, and even right now many countries’ borders could stand to be less draconian, but tight borders are a symptom rather than the disease. Is that disease your own country’s ultranationalism or the bordering country’s desire to conquer you? Depends on the situation. But you gotta look deeper than the surface to find out.

People calling what’s happening in Gaza a genocide are usually pointing to the scale of civilian deaths, destruction of infrastructure, starvation warnings, displacement, and statements from officials , not “because they hate Jews.” You can disagree with the term without turning millions of critics, including many Jews, into antisemites by default.

And honestly, reducing every argument to “you just hate Jews” weakens the fight against actual antisemitism because it treats political disagreement and racial hatred as the same thing.

Sorry is that what this is now? A genocide is when the IDF's and Hamas' data give similar indications of a very normal civilian to combatant combat ratio as compared to other modern wars (especially so since the war consisted of ground warfare in one of the most densely populated areas on the entire planet), but you feel like that has to be hasbara because you've seen otherwise on twitter?
