Are your attempts to download sprites from our wiki resulting in gross crusty images? Well it’s not your fault and it’s not ours! But the good news we can get around Fandom’s stupid file compression system, and I, HackerLady YlimeGirl, will explain how.
Let’s start with the .PNGs, specifically this file. Oh hey btw did you know that you can’t view those file pages if you’re not logged in wtf fandom??? But anyways right clicking on that (or any image appearing on a page) will get you to this lovely easy to remember URL looking something like this: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/mspaintadventures/images/e/ec/John_Egbert2.png/revision/latest?cb=20160517194150 Ah, beautiful. Let’s just download that suck--
WELL THAT DOESNT SEEM RIGHT. Don’t recall any compression artifacts appearing in that sprite when I read the comic. What gives??
Well, if you are logged into fandom and on the file page, you can hit this button which I have emphasized using some subtle markings
And get to this URL instead: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/mspaintadventures/images/e/ec/John_Egbert2.png/revision/latest?cb=20160517194150&format=original
Wow that’s a real roundabout way to do it fandom thank you. Anyways let’s see if this worked...
Huzzah! Success! Victory! We have thwarted Fandom!! Take that!
Alright, let’s use these skills on our next file, a .GIF, all we have to do is hit that butt--
Hey, where’d it go? That’s no good, especially since this image is also looking crusty*:
(*well, if you use firefox at least. attempts while using chrome resulted in an unfucked image here, so who knows man. #firefoxphobia)
Have no fear, just open that image up in a new tab and get that easy to remember URL https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/mspaintadventures/images/c/cc/JadeDress.gif/revision/latest?cb=20110814203737 and use what we learned from John_Egbert2.png to get what we want!
Slap a "&format=original" on the end of that sucker, resulting in this URL https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/mspaintadventures/images/c/cc/JadeDress.gif/revision/latest?cb=20110814203737&format=original and this lovely lovely lovely unfucked image!
Beautiful. Gorgeous. Stunning. Magnificent.
tl;dr add "&format=original" to the end of image URLs to actually get the images as they were originally uploaded and not compressed to hell and back
Apparently Google is responsible for the file format Fandom is using to commit these crimes and as I live in their basement I’ll make sure to give them some constructive feedback on this :)
Also Fandom hates visitors who don’t have accounts I guess but this method works logged out too as long as you have the file URL
