(a/n: mod ysa here!! hope u like this drabble, its a bit all over the place but dw its not rly super angst)
The end of the world just happened a little ironically for Kageyama Tobio. It happened while he was ordering a happy meal in the nearest McDonalds. It just so happened too that he was starving before a rogue dead walking body splats into the glass walls of the fast food chain. Kageyama loses his appetite right then and there.
The zombie was disgusting, the corpse's skin was a rotting gray and its' teeth were coated in a sickening black-red goo. Blood. It was spattered all over the body, from its' torn up clothes to its' grimy toes. Kageyama, completely horrified, could not look away.
Before he knows it, the restaurant was deathly silent. Another one came up, and the two zombies continue to bang themselves into the tempered glass, trying to reach the people inside. Kageyama distantly hears a baby's wail, and panicked voices around him.
The moment the glass cracks is the moment Kageyama finally lets the reality of the situation sink in. A zombie breaks through and sinks its' teeth into a frightened woman's arm. It only took a few seconds before the bite turned into a myriad of colors altogether: black, green, purple, and a bold crimson red.
Kageyama's first instinct is to run. He runs away, exits the restaurant, out into the street where the beginnings of chaos was brewing. He swiftly opens up his phone, calls his mother, and feels the cold drop of dread when she doesn't reply. As fast as his feet can take him, he sprints home. The streets are scarily quiet, except for the few cars driving as fast as they possibly can. Kageyama's heart thunders with every footstep and his lungs are starting to give up on him, but he reaches his home.. and collapses.
Of course.
Of course, with his luck, he finds a bloody trail by the front door, and the corpse of his mother by the porch. Her skin was that rotting ugly gray, and blood pooled around her. Kageyama stares at the kitchen knife lodged into her stomach.
She must have known she was the first person he would check on. He can’t breathe. She didn't want to kill me. She didn't want to bite me.
Kageyama is a mess but he tenses up when he hears footsteps behind him. Alert. Stay alert. He tries to calm the panicked pounding of his heart, willing himself to be rational.
Shakily, he turns around, and is greeted by a wide-eyed, orange-haired boy. His eyes match his own puffy, red ones. Relief flooding the stranger's face, he runs closer now that he's identified Kageyama as human.
And he thought the day couldn't get any better, a zombie drops from the sky from a helicopter flying past, landing directly between them. It felt like some sick joke life decided to play. Even better! Kageyama feels the soulmate timer on his arm beep frantically. The zombie turns to him, attracted to the loud noise, and staggers quicker than he thought was possible.
He had to meet his fucking soulmate in the middle of the fucking apocalypse.
The stranger's light brown eyes glint dangerously. The short boy swiftly whips out a knife from his side and, to Kageyama's horror, charges up to the zombie like a madman and furiously stabs its' chest.
The undead goes down with a gurgling noise, black blood spewing out and spattering on the stranger's clothes. The zombie was momentarily preoccupied, giving the orange-haired boy a little moment to pull out a longer, more jagged knife (it might’ve looked a bit like a sword in Kageyama’s eyes) and without hesitation, he swings.
Kageyama blinks, and a decapitated head falls in the middle of the road. The stranger’s hands are still outstretched, holding the sword with shaky hands. His eyes are blown wide. “I can’t believe I just..”
Kageyama can only stare at him, just as wide-eyed and just as terrified. “A-At least it’s dead..”
The stranger tucks away his sword gingerly, takes a step towards him, and another, and another. Where did he get a sword sharp enough to slice off a head in one stroke..? Kageyama watches the orange-haired boy crouch down next to him. “Are you okay? That zombie almost got you, that was crazy.”
Kageyama stares at him, speechless. "Talk about crazy, you just chopped one of their heads off, now that was crazy!"
The other boy shrugs. “I couldn’t let another person die in front of me.”
Kageyama wonders what his story is, how many loved ones has he seen with blood still warm on the floor?
Sensing a very sensitive topic ahead, he decides to change the subject into something else he was concerned about. "Did you feel the timer on your arm go off just now?"
There was a stretch of silence. "N-No, I didn't..." came a confused reply.
Another pause.
So that meant.. "S-So you just decapitated my fucking soulmate, oh my god.."
"I.. what?!" the stranger paled. "oh. Oh shit, man. Sorry."
Kageyama stares at the gunk of rotting flesh in the middle of the street. "I can't believe this."
"To be fair... it was about to attack you anyway. I kind of saved your life back there." he frowned.
"Unbelievable.." Kageyama growls, but then notices the white unmistakable glow on the other's arm. "wait, you dumbass, you're my soulmate, you piece of shit."
The stranger's eyes widened. "What?" his eyes travel and sees the timer's glow on his arm. "ohh, so it was the timer that was heating up! I almost thought that zombie managed to bite my arm a little.”
Kageyama slapped his newfound soulmate's knee. "You made me feel sorry for some gunk of rotten flesh, dumbass."
At this, his soulmate couldn't help but smile. "You've got to admit.. that's kind of funny."
Kageyama rolls his eyes, but the tiniest traces of a smile blooms on his tear-stained face.
"Hinata Shouyou. That's my name." his newfound soulmate returns the smile. Something a bit like hope starts to spark up in his chest, and it’s not much, but it’s enough to keep Kageyama together right now.
"Kageyama Tobio," he says in turn, and after a few seconds, ironically added, "good timing, soulmate."
