One might think that in today’s modern times that a model map would seem outdated. Model maps are what we see in those old movies and that today, everything is about high tech whizz bang graphics. However, even today, there are still many model maps used in various ways.

In museums, sometimes they are used to explain how the topography of an area could affect historical events, scientific concepts etc.

First, they can be made to help engineers and architects in the initial design. When they can properly see the area and make a proper design. A model can also be used to help investors envision the area. Finally, when they need to sell home or apartment units, they may even make a very fancy model map to help owners make a decision in buying from them.
Yes, such models and maps are still quite useful today. In many cases, they better portray an area because its 3 dimensional, rather than viewing it on a screen.
