These pictures come from something I own, rather than something I found online. Usually I have to research things, but occasionally I can use something of my own, and it's so much more convenient being able to hold the item at whatever angle needed!
The first three photos show a beautiful model sailing ship, which was built by my great-uncle Arthur. My family visited him once, when I was a teenager, and I spent the whole visit poring over his gorgeous model, since I was very much into boats and sailing at the time, and not terribly interested in whatever the adults were talking about. I was amazed and touched to find out, a few years later, that he had taken the time to bequeath the model ship to me in his will. It was a very kind gesture to a family member he barely knew. And it has been not only a lovely heirloom but also an incredibly useful reference.
The other boat in the last two photos is my own sailing dinghy, which has shown up repeatedly in my comics. It's rather too big to move around on my table, but on the other hand, I know it almost as well as Uncle Arthur must have known his model by the time he'd finished building it. I have my own reservations about "write what you know" as writing advice, but it comes in very handy to add flavour to a world without much effort needed for research :)
