I remember reading your what if Animorphs happened in the modern day au, and I keep trying to think about what shitposting on Tumblr would be like after people discovered that there were aliens secretly invading Earth for a few years. What would Tumblr call outbout posts be like?

I’m going to toss this one to the fandalite collective in the hope that others have good ideas, because A) I have at best minimal interest in modern AUs, most of which was used up in that one ficlet, and B) social-media-fic is high on my personal NOPE list.

Fellow fandalites, please give us your utter worst in controller-callout posts.

Modern Animorphs like

“Do it for the Vine, Ax!” “But, Marco, I do not like vines. They are stringy and get tangled in my hooves--” “Not an actual vine, Ax.” “Oh.”

And Tobias and Cassie co-run an animal rights and social justice blog. “Empty the tanks!” “Free the birds!” “Hand ups don’t shoot!” “Black lives matter!” “We have marriage equality, so why not job equality?”

Ax, Tobias, and Jake figured out a way to make the same Andalite technology that is used in Andalite ships to turn thought speak into actual text so that Tobias can interact with the computer and they made something that looks like a tracking bracelet to put around Tobias’s leg so that he can communicate over vast distances with the rest of the Animorphs and vice versa without giving themselves away. 

Ax has a tumblr and it’s full of memes, with the Cinnamon Roll meme being the most common. “I am a precious cinnamon roll but not as much as an actual cinnamon roll.”

Jake is the only one without a tumblr because he never figured it out but sometimes he helps Ax figure out a new meme. 

Ax also upgraded everyone’s smart phones so that they are encrypted for extra security and they can communicate with Tobias via the ‘tracking bracelet’.

Also they have found a way for Tobias to use his little ‘tracking bracelet’ for time keeping. Using Andalite inspired tech, it tells him how long its been since the others have Morphed.

Less conspicuous than him holding an actual watch.

Okay, but how cool would a retelling of the Animorphs series in blog format be?

Because let’s be real- we all loved the interactive book format, but logically, they didn’t make a lot of sense. Did Jake, Cassie, Marco, Rachel, and Tobias just walk into a publishing house like ‘here’s a bunch of stories about aliens written by thirteen year olds, please publish them’? I mean, no sane publishers would dole them out, not to mention that in the Animorphs universe, anybody could be a Controller. The Yeerks would definitely have people in the news outlets and publishing industries, to make sure that their invasion remains on the down-low and under their jurisdiction. 

There are a lot of other issues with the way the Animorphs stories are told- namely, the entire ‘we can’t tell you our last names or where we live’, because the details in the books would give the yeerks a.) the knowledge that it isn’t andalite bandits they’re facing, it’s humans and b.) enough information to figure out the identity of the Animorphs regardless of their shadiness about their living details- but those are unavoidable. 

Think about it: a modern retelling of the Animorphs’ stories online, in the form of a tumblr blog. Basically, the plotlines of the books would be condensed into one or two blog posts written by their respective narrators, who serve as mods on the blogs. Obviously, Tobias and Ax’s story segments would have to be typed out by their teammates- although I really like the idea of Ax morphing to human and writing out one of his own bits; he’d probably be fascinated by typing and blogs and computers, and that’d be a unique way to format a story.

And the blog would also be an opportunity to expand on the Animorphs universe, because it wouldn’t have to focus solely on the main stories. There could be trivia, extra bits- joke posts from Marco, sketches and animal care tips from Cassie, playlists and fashion compilations from Rachel, really random and weird things from Ax, arguments between the characters in the comment sections, maybe even a FAQ section and Answers from people? Like, Cassie giving advice to someone who thinks their parents might be Controllers, or whatever.

I feel like that kind of formatting would be extremely interesting and relatable, and a cool way of modernizing a series that is unappealing to some because of its pointed 90s roots.
