Module 5 Scavenger Hunt

This poster advertising the class “Gender in News Media and Technology” uses imagery that has the denotative meaning of 4 women in different clothing and backgrounds giving a talk.

However, the poster also has the connotative meaning of unification and power empowerment. All four of these women come from either different careers or backgrounds as denoted by their outfits, but they are connotatively unified by the same red coloring in their clothing. From their suits, to the construction hat, to the head cloth, they all have the red color scheme bringing them together. The smiles and red blushes on the face also connotes a sense of confidence and happiness that empowers all four women.

This bell graphic that appears in every elevator is a great example of an iconic function. It bears a literal resemblance to a bell to inform people that the button can be used to run for help, similarly to a bell.

This “make summer a thing” poster is a great example of the use of indexical function. Instead of trying to use a literal image of summer, it uses graphics that are existentially related with summer. The watermelon is a fruit that is commonly eaten during summer times. The flamingo represents lawn flamingos or even inflatable pool flamingos that you would also see in the summer. The sun is a more literal representation of summer weather. The beach umbrella also invokes the idea of beaches and summer weather. The flower also invokes the relationship between plants flourishing and in the summer weather. While each of these graphics are not an iconic or symbolic image of summer itself, they act as an indexical function due to their pre-existing relationship with summer as a concept.

The recycle symbol on this recycling bin is a great example of a symbolic function. It is culturally accepted that the graphic of 3 arrows interloping in the triangle shape is the symbol of recycling. Even if the arrows have nothing to do with the act of recycling, it is a culturally accepted representation.

6. This poster advertising the class “Games and Society” is a great example of a graphic that references a past aesthetic. The font used in the header specifically references the pixelated aesthetic of video games fonts in the 1980. During the time, video game graphics were extremely limited, So this pixelated look came to define the aesthetic of the time period. This immediately invokes a feeling of nostalgia, as this era was such an iconic period of video game history.  #module5

Module 5: ME, MYSELF, AND OTHERS: DEVELOPMENT OF VALUES, PRINCIPLES AND IDEOLOGIES, LOVE AND ATTRACTION, AND RISK TAKING BEHAVIOR AND PEER INFLUENCES

This module had us discussing the different types of love and the different combinations of conditions there are. It felt like doing math and logic gates as a Computer Science student. Additionally, the topic of love languages was off-handedly mentioned. Made me realize that I perform acts of service to the people I care about. Must be something fulfilling when your efforts get seen.

Another topic in the module is about peer influence and risk taking behavior. Peers do give you the confidence you sometimes cannot give yourself. This can be a good thing or bad thing based on the peers in the context, tbh. Peer pressure for the purpose of being productive are best ones in my opinion. I appreciate the peers I’ve encountered here in this campus, I think I’ve changed of the better.

Image 1 is a design which has recipes for two summer looking cocktails. The donotative meaning of this design is giving us the information and recipe on how to make eahc of the cocktails. On the other hand, the connotative meaning of this design is encouraging the viewer to make them or at the least read the page through the bright colors, gropahics on the page, and the bold/multi colored title of the page. It gives the viewer te impression that the cocktails are fun and exciting, and maybe they can be too if they follow the recipe.

Image 2 is an exmaple of a piece of graphic design which has an iconic function. This image is an icon because it is showing a person walking, which it is what is being signicfied to the driver/pedestrian.

Image 3 is a piece of design which has an indexical function because it is advertising football, by showing the player which is an index.

Image 4 is a piece of design that has a symbolic function because it is a road sign which has a meaning/sign which only people from michigan know. What im referring to im the “M” which is culturally learned making it a symbol.

Image 5 has a label which has a font and design which references a past style. The past style which the product is trying to capture is a tuscan or italian aesthetic, and its trying to get the buyer/viewer to think that the product uses ancient, healthy, or homegrown ingredients.

Crystals 

This module about crystal is also easy to finish and comprehend like module 3. I find this module a time to relax since the module before crystals is hard to finish. It is short read though it is very educational. I did not encounter any problem in getting to the bottom of it as this topic is covered on senior high.

Module #5

Figure #1 (Question 1 - 2)  - Nike swoosh logo

One can associate the logo with two or both viewpoints. Some interpret the logo with their slogan “Just do it!”.  Some associate the brand of Nike with fashion, sports, sneaker history, and pop culture. Others can interpret it as a reference to the wings of the Greek goddess Nike. It could also be associated with the Greek goddess as Nike was the goddess of victory. Both interpretations are a reflection of its cultural significance in either scenario. 

Figure #2 - Spiderman Logo (iconic function) The sign for this calendar is the spider-man branding logo. The red sign behind the font matches the symbol on Miles’ (Black one) back; thus making him the signified of the piece. That and he is the main character of the movie. The action of him swinging and being the largest object in the cover is also an example of indexical function.  

Figure #3 - Drawing pad (indexical function) The rocket figure in the middle relates to the signified; as it visually illustrates something that can be drawn on the drawing sheets. It’s a rocket flying in space. 

Figure #4 - Charmin Bear (symbolic function) This portion of the design was made as a means to symbolize how strong the toilet paper is. It correlates with what the brand is known and advertised for. 

Figure #5 - Wonder Woman Poster (past “style”)

I see this poster as a reference and reflection of the time period of when the Rosie the Riveter was designed. Both were created during the same time period; Wonder Woman was created in 1941, and Rosie was created in 1943. The first reference begins with the phrasing. The Wonder Woman poster says “She can do it”, while Rosie’s poster says “We can do it”. Secondly, the typeface used on the Wonder Woman poster is similar to if not the same as the Rosie poster. This poster was designed within the last few years. I believe the phrasing “She can do it” pays a nod to the women’s rights and empowerment movements that occurred before, during, and after the time period it references.
