Aussie investment fund scraps IPO
SYDNEY, Sept 23:
Fund manager Moelis & Co pulled its Australia listing of an A$300 million (RM864.95 million) global investment vehicle after failing to rally investor support despite hiring a popular television host as its chairman.
New York-listed Moelis’s Australian unit said on Aug 11 that it had commitments from investors worth A$100 million, clearing the A$100 million minimum it wanted to raise before listing its new Global Wealth Partners Fund Ltd (GWP) on Friday.
But today, the company which hired television host and finance commentator David Koch to chair GWP cancelled the listing, blaming investor fatigue of listed investment companies and an unnamed wealth manager which had committed a large portion of the A$100 million deciding against it.
“We’re paid to make tough calls, and the tough call personally was to change tack,” said Moelis Australia Asset Management Ltd head Andrew Martin. “But I think it was the right call for investors.”
Australia is headed for its biggest year of initial public offers (IPOs) in nearly two decades as company owners hope to benefit from a booming equity market.
But the market yesterday had its biggest one-day loss in nearly two months, helping wipe out most of the year’s gains and prompting concerns the IPO window may soon close.
A faltering local sharemarket should have made Moelis’s global diversification product more attractive, but “you’re often dealing with sentiment, and it’s not necessarily rational sentiment”, Martin said.
With under A$100 million, the fund was better unlisted because it would save administrative costs and eliminate potential liquidity problems, he added.
Moelis plans to relaunch the fund as an unlisted vehicle with “exactly the same investment strategy”, Martin said

Preston McNeil, an Econ major from Boston College in Boston Massachusetts, shares with us some of his experiences at the investment bank Moelis and Company in Boston last summer. He will be working there full-time starting this summer.
Where did you intern and for how long?
I interned at Moelis and Company in Boston for 10 weeks.
What was your position?
I was a Summer Analyst in investment banking.
Explain a project you worked on.
The main thing that I did there was projecting companies’ financial future with different Excel models that was then used by various private equity companies. We would show how profitable these companies would be as well as the returns for the company. We also worked on a lot of due diligence for a company that wanted to sell. This meant a lot of summarizing who the company was, what they wanted to do, what their products were, etc.
To whom would you recommend this type of internship?
I would recommend this internship to people who have interest in finance and want a great place to start their careers. Also, people need to be very conscious of the hours demanded for this type of work.
Why do you think it was a good resume builder?
It was great for the resume because it shows that you are both capable of working in the financial world and of learning from a very broad perspective. It shows that you can work hard, that you are competitive, and that you can deal with other people. It’s a great foundation to start your career.
Does it lead to future job possibilities?
Yes, I will be working there full-time starting this summer. Also, there are a lot of great contacts that you can make while there. I had awesome opportunities to network with some interesting people.
What steps could someone else take to get a similar internship?
To be more prepared I would suggest taking several finance classes, and most specifically corporate finance. Particularly helpful classes are those that teach different valuation processes and how everything relating to that works. I would also suggest networking with people and working on becoming as personable as possible. Practice interviews are also really helpful in preparing for this job. Lastly, it is important to know Excel very well.
