For MoeMonday we will be looking at some unique street art. Since the 80’s, Japan has used manhole covers as an obscure medium of pavement art all over the country as a unique way to highlight historical or cultural importance in an area and as a great way to attract tourists. With over 10,000 colourful and unique designs used all over the country and are continually releasing more designs, it would seem this artform is here to stay.
The Pokemon company designed their own twist on this traditional art with their project Pokemon Local Acts to be distributed to struggling or disaster struck locations in different prefectures to encourage both local and international tourism to boost the local economy.
There are currently around 150 different Pocket Monster designs currently installed in Nara, Tokyo, Hokkaido as well as other prefectures but it has recently been announced that the historic city of Kyoto is to receive new second generation pokemon manhole covers or Pokefuta. Their designs feature Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Pichu, Totodile and the legendary flying pokemon Ho-Oh.
These Pokefuta also serve as Pokestops in Pokemon Go and can be found on this handy map https://local.pokemon.jp/en/manhole/ in case you are lucky enough to be able to travel.
