🌻 Introducing the playable families of Moira’s Hope! 🌻  (There is a fourth family, but they won’t be introduced for a little while yet)

#1 - The Compton/Merridew Household

When young Amelia Merridew* received a letter informing her that Moira Compton - an aging witch famed both for her prodigious magic skill and her reclusive nature - wanted to take her on as an apprentice, her family was overjoyed, in spite of her protestations. It was a golden opportunity, so Amelia was swiftly and unceremoniously shipped off to the sleepy little village Moira had called home for as long as anyone could remember to begin her training.

#2 - The Edgecombe Household

Basil Edgecombe is the Mayor of Moira’s Hope, which makes him a very busy person: although the village is small, overseeing its day-to-day activities is still a challenge for one man. Basil doesn’t complain though; he enjoys being in charge, and he is in charge, no matter what some might whisper when he isn’t around to hear. The rest of the family is made up of his wife, Alice, his two children, Duncan and Esther, and Roxy the dog.

#3 - The Devereux Household

Alcide Devereux grew up in San Myshuno and holds a law degree, but the fast-paced life in the big city was never his dream. When his elderly uncle passed away and left him his farm in a remote village, Alcide decided it was time to begin living the life he actually wanted, especially since he’d recently married his boyfriend, Raj. The newlyweds sold everything and moved to Moira’s Hope to raise sheep and cattle - they even adopted an adorably goofy mutt called Flocky**.

Moira Compton

She has been named one of the 100 Most Influential Witches of the Past 100 Years.

Although her birth date is no secret, most people are still surprised to find out that she is over 140 years old.

Moira's Hope bears her name, but most inhabitants believe she was named after it.

Moira likes her tea with milk and no sugar; she drinks her coffee black, or sometimes with a bit of cream.

Her first claim to fame was discovering a series of spells which allow for the manipulation of the flow of time - slowing it down, speeding it up, freezing it. She has since made several other notable contributions to the field of temporal magic, though all her attempts at reversing time have failed. She has postulated a theory that time travel into the past is impossible.

Amelia was still only half-awake when she made it to the dining room, not bothering to stifle her yawns, oblivious to Moira’s disapproving looks. 

A quick meal later, dressed in an unfamiliar school uniform, Amelia was ushered out the door, warned that if she didn’t get a move on, she would be late for her first day of school.

At least the fresh air helped wake her up.

But she was the one; vision upon vision had confirmed it.

Moira hoped she wasn’t wrong; if she was, many people would pay the price.

Alice blinked in momentary confusion. She had not expected Moira to refuse a woman in need - did she not trust them? The idea that she might be genuinely afraid of John seemed preposterous - true, the man did like to stir the pot, but there had always been a witch in Moira’s Hope - the village even bore her name! Most people had known Moira Compton all their lives; they liked to mutter under their breaths but at the end of the day, they had all made use of her skills at one time or another. John Clare was full of hot air and only a few, like her fool of a husband, paid him any mind.

Alice: “Could you at least tell us why you won’t help? You helped me when I asked!”

Alice’s tone was terse; her annoyance made her bold, almost flippant. Well, Vanessa deserved an explanation! Moira Compton’s eyes narrowed dangerously.

Moira: “And I’m beginning to think it was a mistake! You walk into my home like it’s the village market, looking for a magic cure that won’t affect your delicate sensibilities - yes, I did notice you reassuring her that it’s only a ‘herbal drink’ and ‘nothing dangerous’ - as if you had any idea! But, of course, as long as you can pretend it’s just a fancy tea, you can go back home to your husband with your conscience clear, isn’t that right?”

The second part of Moira’s tirade had obviously been aimed at Vanessa, who gasped and stepped back. The witch was relentless, however.

Moira: “If it had been just that, I could’ve overlooked it, but that isn’t all of it by half. I refuse to help you have another child while you’re mistreating the one you already have!”

Alice was confused; what in the world was the woman talking about? Vanessa, mistreating Faith? 

Alice: “What -?”

Moira: “She knows what I’m talking about. That poor girl’s life must be hell, raised to hate herself and deny who she really is, all because of some ridiculous outdated beliefs!”

The look on Vanessa’s face was one of pure horror - she knew! Somehow, she knew the truth about Faith!

Moira: “Go home, Vanessa - your daughter needs her mother. Take care of her, love her, protect her - or you will regret it one day.”

She knew! She knew!

Oh, sweet Watcher, she knew!

Alice was too stunned to react when Vanessa bolted out the door. It was not going at all as she’d envisioned, and her mind was reeling from the implications of Moira’s accusations. Whatever she was on about, she had to be wrong - Vanessa was a good mother! Did she really have to scare her out of her wits like that?!

Alice: “I don’t think that was necessary, Miss Compton...”

Moira’s patience, which was in short supply at the best of times, was quickly running out. Sparks flew out of her eyes and her nostrils flared angrily. Although she was no taller, Alice felt as if the older woman was suddenly looming over her. She cringed away.

Moira: “I don’t care what you think, girl! You should go too, all this tension is bad for the baby. And mark my words: if the torches and pitchforks come out, your husband might tie you down on the sacrificial pyre himself!” 

Hidden behind the refrigerator, an empty fruit basket in one hand, Amelia was eavesdropping.

Faith being mistreated and hiding who she really is?

Torches and pitchforks and sacrificial pyres?

..What?!

Okay, I wanted to finish the arc so I can go back to Walden for a bit! I’ve been missing it.

I’m invested in Moira’s Hope now though, so I’ll probably alternate between them from now on, since they’re practically part of the same ‘verse.

Duncan didn’t think anything could spoil the perfect beauty of that moment, but he was wrong.

A storm, of sorts, was on the horizon.

Mrs Crumplebottom was headmistress at his school and aside from ruling her domain with an iron fist, she had the habit of patrolling the village looking to stick her nose into everybody’s business. 

In particular, she abhorred what she considered “breaches of decency”, such as showing too much skin or engaging in public displays of affection. Swimming was not exempt, and the old battleaxe did not rest until she had Duncan on the pier for a (verbal, this time) dressing down.

Faith Clare had been so immersed in her game of chess she did not even notice Moira Compton until she sat down across from her and began rearranging the pieces on the board. 

The girl froze, terrified at being so close to the infamous village witch.

Moira: “There’s no need to look at me like that, girl. I’m not going to bite your head off.”

Faith’s lips worked soundlessly, her mouth too dry to form words. Her head moved from side to side, as if looking for something. Her eyes were wide and moist with fear. The older woman smiled wryly.

Moira: “Your father isn’t here either.”

Faith flinched at that, but she seemed to relax a tiny bit. She continued to eye Moira as one might eye a particularly dangerous snake, but there was a hint of curiosity in there as well.

Faith: “It was you, wasn’t it? You did something. The sun was brighter, and everything just seemed...prettier.”

Moira: “Interesting, I thought the spell was quite subtle, too subtle for the layperson to notice. Even more interesting, I used wandless magic, so you couldn’t have seen me doing it. How did you know?”

Faith gulped and averted her gaze, but Moira was staring at her with renewed intensity.

Moira: “You sensed the magic in the air, didn’t you?”

Faith: “No! No, you’re wrong! I didn’t sense anything! I have to go!”
