O.O you guys I just figured out why Voldemort didn't like to be called that.
He hates his birth name due to Xenophobia and all that, so in school (let's say 14-16 years old, because we never knew exactly when he decided it) he wanted to be "cool" and change it, and wouldn't it be cooler if he made it from an anagram of his birth name? (Physopatic kids behaving like regular kids sometimes, yk?) and wouldnt it be even cooler if it meant something like "Death fears me " in another language or something?
So anyways he ends up with ' I am Lord voldemort', isn't he smart and awesome? so of course he has to tell it to his friends (*cough* followers & acolytes *cough* ) so they can see how superior he is from them (He is very proud).
The name sticks and he is as happy as a psychopath can be, until he grows up and realizes (like we all have in the past) how cringy he was as a teenager and oh merlin, why did he think that was a good idea? But is too late to change it, unless he wanted to reveal that was not his true name (Not an option)
So he makes it a taboo and ensures a horrible fate for those who utter that name, because how dare they remind Him of his teenage cringyness.
