I've been learning small things about alchemy lately so of course when I saw this alchemical art piece I immediately thought of Varian.
Varian and the Green Lion:
I've heard it explained that the green lion represents dangerous underlying instincts that people repress to achieve peace and comfort. It's easy to relate this back to Varian in season 1, having been on edge and generally very desperate and aggressive as a result of his circumstances. In a way he resorted to the same dangerous instinctual mindset that the green lion represents.
Not only does the sun pretty obviously represent Corona, but from the little I've learned about alchemy, the sun is used to symbolize gold, perfection, and purity. I think this relates to Corona, or at the very least what Corona strives to be.
From a more literal standpoint, I've heard it said that the green lion represents vitriol or sulfuric acid which dissolves many metals but is unable to dissolve gold. I could relate this to how Varian is ultimately defeated in the fight against Corona as well as how Varian is unable to dissolve the amber that trapped his father.
I have lots of different interpretations of how I could relate Varian to alchemical symbolism, he's an alchemist, after all. Even with this one piece I have too many ideas to explain and I also have very very little knowledge about actual alchemical symbolism so I could always be wrong about some things. Hopefully this made just a little bit of sense.
