"You feel different, Cas ," said Dean. "A bit worn out."
"You have not touched me, " said Castiel, looking confused.
"No, like your vibe, man, " said Dean. "Your mojo is all screwed up, makes me tired."
Cas shrugged, looking at the stars as he leaned back onto the hood of the Impala. "Everyone who hangs around you starts to feel tired, Dean," he said in his flat way, his tone nearly emotionless.
Dean knew him better than that; could hear the genuine exhaustion tinting the words. "You gonna take a break, then?" he asked. "Wouldn't blame you."
"There is too much that depends on our actions," Castiel snapped, before closing his mouth determinedly and refusing to let his eyes leave the sky.
"Yeah, sure. I get it. Mark of Cain still freakin' you out, huh?" Dean replied, and Cas shifted slightly. "Freaks me out a bit too, not gonna lie. Still, not a demon anymore, that's gotta count for something."
Shoving himself off the Impala and walking a bit away, Cas turned around and faced Dean. "Will you turn on the headlights for me, please?" he asked, and Dean frowned, but downed the last of the beer in his bottle and got up, shoving himself into the car and sticking the keys into the ignition so he could snap on the lights.
"What do you need them for?" he asked as he got out, then stopped short.
Castiel had turned around, back to Dean, and was staring at the ground. Dean stared too; slowly unfurling onto the dirt was a shadow. Two dark wings spread out from Castiel's form on the road, only they weren't strong like Dean remembered from flashes of lightning at the warehouse where he'd first met the angel. These wings were tattered, broken - even just in their shadow form Dean could see large patches of feathers ripped out and gone, the way some of the primaries were torn apart.
"Cas..." he breathed out, and when the angel's shoulders tensed, he turned back to the car and flicked off the lights. "Cas, you okay?"
"I am... convalescing," Castiel explained after a moment of silence, shaking himself in a way that made Dean think he was invisibly folding his wings back into place.
"Right," Dean said, "Anything Sam and I should know about? To help?" Nobody ever said Winchesters were the poster children for talking about important things like feelings and the end of the world and how to deal with your angel friend having his holy appendages look like they got mauled by a hellhound.
Castiel turned back to face Dean, sticking his hands in the pockets of his coat. "I know of nothing that would help. Sometimes experiences change you. Parts you can't fix."
"I wouldn't say that," Dean said, trying to cheer the angel up. "Look at me. Not a demon, like I said. And the extra benefits of the Mark besides. Not the worst deal out of the bundle."
Cas just looked at Dean for a moment, and then disappeared, as angels do, Dean thought to himself frustratedly.

Taking a moment to stare at himself in the broken motel mirror, Castiel attempted to regulate the breathing of the human host - Jimmy - that he currently inhabited, trying to remind himself that feeling too much toward his charges was what got them into this in the first place.
But it was more than difficult, trying to keep control. It just kept running through his mind.
"Not the worst deal out of the bundle," he'd scoffed, not knowing, not able to see. But Cas could: Cas always could.
Two massive dragons' wings folding behind his friend's back, piercing the Impala with no regard to physical matter, dark scales shimmering and blocking out the stars.
Castiel took another moment and gripped the sink before stepping away and meeting his own eyes in the mirror. Sometimes experiences change you, he told himself, and turned away.
