Speaking of pumpkin, I heard you don’t have pre-made pastry shells in Australia? She tried to make pumpkin pie and was all “uhh…” This seems like a shame. Pumpkin pie kicks ass.

I swear I replied to this just before but when I posted it, my reply was gone... anyway...

In the bakery aisle at the supermarket you can get pie and tart shells that are sweet pastry, and work well for things like caramel tart. So if a pumpkin pie uses sweet pastry then you could totally use a pre-made pie shell. But otherwise you can make pretty good pie dough using a mixer with a dough attachment, and blind-baking is easy enough with rice if you don't have the cooking beads.

I don't know what a pumpkin pie would taste like with Aussie pumpkins, but then, I don't know what it tastes like with the American ones either.

I was just looking for a post and saw that you'd mentioned some episodes of s4 you thought were awful. What was bad about Voyage of the Damned/Sontaran stuff/Journey's End? I just watched Journey's End, it was beautiful and sad and stuff (except Donna's exit, that was just toooo sad).

Voyage of the Damned is just... I was okay with it being unnecessarily, mean-spiritedly grim for a Christmas special, right up until the moment where Ten ragequits and decides he's God (or "the highest authority" or whatever) and has sooo muuuch paaaain because... he foolishly promised a bunch of people he was going to save them all and some of them died anyway? Like, 900 years of walking into trouble and NOW he starts noticing the staggering NPC body counts and deciding they're his fault?

Sontarans: These episodes I think could actually have been decent with more editing, but as it stands, Ten's unbelievable knee-jerk prissiness about guns and violence wrecks it. It's forced, it's unlikeable, it comes out of nowhere, and it hollows out the entire message of "you can't stop violence with more violence" by turning it into "guns and the military are EVIL AND UNFORGIVABLE IN ALL CASES and using force to defend yourself against violence is BAD I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU'D EVEN FUCKING DO THAT, goddammit Martha I thought you were a better person than to even associate with these people without yelling at them about their FLAGRANT IMMORALITY at every turn, now I can't even trust YOU."

Like, the Doctor has always been pretty disdainful of violence as a method, but he worked for UNIT in the 70s, he and the Brig pretty much just mutually eye-rolled at each other on the question of whether bullets were an effective way to deal with alien menaces, so to have him throwing hissy fits over the merest whiff of gunpowder for no particular reason is shit writing. It also undermines the point by making it look like it's motivated by his Issues-with-a-capital-I rather than honest belief, especially when he solves the problem by the utterly nonviolent method of... blowing up the Sontaran battle fleet. At that point it ceases to be about the futility of violence and becomes the story of "Ten frantically lashes out whenever he sees a speck in someone else's eye that looks too much like the two-by-four in his own." And he never gets called on it, nor on the bullshit rationalization method of "violence is unforgivable unless you have no choice, so I WILL GIVE THEM A CHOICE (that I know they'll refuse) to make myself feel better about going all Old Testament on them."

Journey's End: I will ACTUALLY RAGESPLODE if I list off the reasons Donna's ending makes my skin crawl--go back through my 'donna noble' or 'ten is a horrible person' tags, it's probably in there somewhere--but can we just talk for a minute about Davros' ~final revelation~ to the Doctor. Is it to do with anything that's actually wrong with him? The rampant hypocrisy? The playing god? The increasingly dysfunctional coping mechanisms and self-justification for his guilt? The blood on his hands? The attitude that he knows what's best for everyone and he can make their decisions for them? That it's his responsibility to save everyone, and when terrible things happen to them, his pain is more important than theirs? HAHAHA NOPE. It's that he "makes people into weapons." Instead of puncturing his BS hypocritical ulterior-motivated prissiness about violence, Davros fucking validates it. Never mind that his companions have agency and can make their own choices, never mind that there's nothing intrinsically horrific about using the methods available to you to defend your planet from being exterminated by a bunch of omnicidal pepperpots and that this is actually ADMIRABLE. Nope. Somehow the Doctor is responsible for the fact that not all of his friends are as hypocritically judgemental about violence as he is. And as usual, it's ALL ABOUT HIS PAIN and how nobly and prettily he suffers.

Add in the fact that while Rose and Martha achieved their big series-finale triumphs by their own grit/skill/better qualities, Donna had no agency in hers. It was an ACCIDENT. Or like... ~destiny~ or something. And half of her triumph was ensuring that there was a strategically-placed Doctor (or clone Doctor) there to save the day, and the rest was because she got half of the Doctor's brain. None of it had a single thing to do with what made Donna awesome.

And then the Doctor goes and dumps Rose and Handy off in the parallel universe without so much as a by-your-leave, doesn't even ask what they want because he knows what's best for everyone, and orders her to FIX him. Because he's... broken? Broken because he blew up all the Daleks? Never mind that it was that or let them destroy the universe. Never mind that original!Doctor killed all the Daleks at least twice (the Time War and Doomsday). Never mind that ROSE KILLED ALL THE DALEKS and Nine snogged her. Nope, he's broken and it's Rose's responsibility to "fix" him, because deliberately setting out to fix another person always works, of course. Christ, what a basis for a relationship.

I won't give myself an aneurysm by ranting about Donna's ending. I won't. Suffice to say that RTD was so focused on how ~sad~ it was that he completely missed how EXTREMELY FUCKING DARK AND MESSED UP it is to make the Doctor do something that horrific to a companion.
