Bourgeois, by Paul Gavarni, 1837. An Eighteen-Thirties man who has ditched his pants to go fishing, giving us a great look at his undergarments—just a shirt, and it looks like he has girded his loins a bit with it. He wears a broad-brimmed hat suitable for outdoorsy pursuits and his watch hangs where a fob pocket would normally be located.

His wife reading a book by Paul de Kock is a joke in itself. It's something like the 1830s France equivalent of reading a best-seller you bought in the airport: lowbrow and common.

Hugo, in this century, will rout all his contemporaries, even though he is full of bad things: but what lung-power! What inspiration! "For me, it's never a matter of doing pretty costumes," said Neofitou. "I'm trying to bring a world--with period pieces, specifically, it's an alien world--to modern audiences, to make that world the present. I don't want to have a barrier between the audience and what's going on onstage. You have to make that costume so familiar, so real to that character, that the audience doesn't see the costumes, it sees the character. I'm trying to augment what the director is saying or the actor is doing," Neofitou says.
