Modesty for Men: A Divine Command
“Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts.” ~Quran 24:30
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whatever of the lower garment is beneath the ankles is in the Fire.” Narrated by al-Bukhari, 5450
Haya (modesty) is not exclusive to women it is equally incumbent upon men. Just as women are commanded to cover themselves, men are obligated to lower their gaze and protect their modesty. Some men are quick to judge women’s modesty, yet fail to lower their own gaze. They point out women’s lack of covering, but what of their own accountability? Has Allah not commanded men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts?
In today’s world, many men wear tight jeans, shorts, or revealing clothing when stepping out. Is this acceptable? If women are instructed to wear loose, concealing clothing, should men not also adhere to the same principle? Men’s attire should be loose, ensuring no part of their body is outlined or exposed, so as not to attract the gaze of others.
Men must also safeguard their gaze. Social media, widely used, is a mix of beneficial and harmful content. Avoid the sin of gazing at inappropriate material, such as explicit content featuring women. On the Day of Judgment, every part of your body including your eyes will testify for or against you. Protect your gaze, for it is with these same eyes that you hope to behold Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala.
Do you want your eyes to bear witness against you on that Day, depriving you of seeing your Lord? If not, master your desires and guard your gaze diligently.
Let's Make Dua Together
May Allah guide us to embody true modesty and make us worthy of Paradise.
Ameen, Allhumma Ameen.
