Like a Wave
"You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment." ~Henry David Thoreau
Just when I felt like life was throwing us a break, another wave of disaster comes crashing down upon us. Let me fill you in on what life had given and taken from us this past year.
°°°°°°°°°°
Not long after my last post Allen was hired for a multi-location manager for a small mobile phone franchise. Let me tell you, their business structure was a mess…not to mention a little shady. None-the-less we had income flowing in and we were happy. We even found a cheap apartment. It wasn’t much, but it was certainly better than sleeping in the car. Allen worked hard 6 days a week and we began to breath again, and soon we were able to breath a sigh of relief.
°°°°°°°°°°
After a few months we began to rebuild our savings. We we on our way to financial freedom, or so we thought. Once Allen had swept into the company, cleaned out the nonsense and began to drive sales the owners dropped a bomb on him.
Allen. Was. Let. Go.
Our hearts sunk into ice water. Why had they let him go when he was doing such a great job? Our guess? They were in over their heads and hired someone with experience to fix their mess. I suppose we may never know the answer. We were freaking out, I mean we had saved some, but certainly not enough to live on for very long. The answer to our prayers came in the form of Allen’s sister, who offered us a place to stay in his hometown. We had lived in New England briefly as newlyweds, and, had loved it. For our family’s survival we had to consider moving cross country into the unknown. We agreed to try to survive in our little apartment. But the job hunt was not kind to us this time.
°°°°°°°°°°
Our eviction notice did not come as a surprise a few months later, but that doesn’t mean that our hearts didn’t sink when we saw the red note tapped to our front door telling us to vacate. It was time. We agreed to accept Leah’s help. With heavy hearts, and drained spirits we packed our most important possessions in to our car, what would fit anyway. We filled up our tank and set off into the unknown.
°°°°°°°°°°
The trip was hard, and uncomfortable. Did I mention I was 7 months pregnant? As if our journey wasn’t stressful enough right? After 4 days of driving we arrived, greeted by the crisp New England morning air. Leah did not seemed pleased to see us, and I began to grow very weary. For whatever the reason, she and her growing family not only refused to let us stay, even a couple nights with them, but also didn’t offer us a shower.
°°°°°°°°°°
For the next week I wept in our car each night as I tried to position my ever growing belly in the car, along with my husband and 20 month old son. I’m not sure how, but for two weeks we managed. We rented a storage unit and began our homeless living. I suppose our previous experienced helped with the logistical aspect of our survival. But this had to change, and hopefully before our baby was born. After 2 weeks Allen found full time employment with a major retail chain. It wasn’t enough to survive comfortably, but, it was certainly enough to gives us a small piece of mind.
°°°°°°°°°°
We applied for financial assistance, because we knew that we could not do this alone. Two weeks before our son was born we were placed into an emergency shelter, a run-down motel. We were allowed a few bags in the room. It wasn’t much, a wave of relief washed over or family. At least our newborn would not live in a car. And at the end of the summer our little Eugene (Gene) was born a healthy, lively little angel.
°°°°°°°°°°
It has been six months since we arrived in the shelter, but we try to remain hopeful. Some days are harder than others. We apply to many hosting units and are wait listed for others. Right now, that is all we can do. Allen works hard for us, and I take care of the kids and bid for freelance work. It is few and far between, but I know it will get better. It has to right?
°°°°°°°°°°
Tune in next time…
