The Mongol’s Influence
I know that the Earth Kingdom is heavily modeled after China, that the Fire Nation is heavily modeled off of Japan, the Water Tribes (North, South, Foggy Swamp) are modeled after Native Americans, and that the Air Nomads are modeled from Tibetan Monks. But I never saw much of a Mongolian influence, despite it being listed as source material. Until I looked at the Mongolian flag.

Literally half of the show’s symbolic and emblematic influences come directly off of the Mongolian Flag. And if you add the crescent and circle below the Fire Nation emblem to it, you literally get the Fire Lord’s Royal Headpiece.
