This lumpy lad is the Monkey-faced prickleback [Cebidichthys violaceus], a bony fish that is primarily herbivorous in adulthood, but entirely carnivorous as larvae. Although pricklebacks aren’t fished as much as they were in the past, they are still caught by some fisherman, who use bait on the end of a long stick to entice them out of hiding.
