34. Nape of neck

Most of the time you spend alone with him is spent in almost silence, but you don't have a single problem with that. After all, weren't you both carved from the same brand of loneliness over the last decade? Presence alone makes the absence of sound warm.

Over time, you find out that he likes getting help while grooming. He sits on your bed, tail coiling seemingly into infinity over the covers, and before you join him, you take a few moments just to take the sight of him in.

He never feels material enough, in his orange glow and low hum of static, and you're irrationally afraid of reaching out and seeing your hand phase through him, as if he were a phantom or a hologram. You feel lucky every time you do and he's still there, all soft feathers and welcoming touches, miles of wing folded against each of your sides, as he turns his back to you so you can get ready to work.

You'll never tire of this.

As long fingers thread through even longer feathers, putting each of them in place, you think of the two of you now, and how much things changed since you were kids. You think of his trials, his losses, the despair he must have felt after the game was over, and how much it means that he's here right now.

You owe him your life, you owe him centuries of happiness, and as he almost falls asleep before you, you almost drop your most noble of tasks to wrap your arms around him, tell him to stay.

But you don't. You work dilligently through his slumber, little bird like noises filling the air between you, putting a smile on your lips and a new pep to your heart.

When you're done, you finally have the will to wake him, and he curls his wings to appreciate a job well done. He playfully asks what you'd like as a reward, and all you do is spread your arms over the back of his wings, dive face first on his neck ruff, placing several kisses on the nape of his neck.

"My reward? Do this a lot in the future."

His reply is to turn around, almost toppling you over with a wing, only to pull you into a tight hug you unconditionally sink into.

You like to think of apologies as cupcakes: sentiment as the batter, desire for redemption as the frosting, a kiss of promise to a neck halo of feathers as the cherry on top.

You don't know what makes you smile and giggle more at the moment, if the bird puns he spews continuously or the tickle of feathers in your cheek as he decides to perch on your chest.

On a rare moment of solemn contemplation, you lay your head on his lap as he spills one of his saddest stories: tears fall on your face while you kiss the invisible bruises on the knuckles of his hands.

You don't know who this soothes more, if you or him, but you know you're at peace among the rustling of wings, grooming them thoroughly, only stopping to ask for more kisses from chirping lips.

"I'm proud of you," your arms are wrapped around his waist, and you lean to press sweet kisses to the nape of his neck. "I'm so happy you didn't slip away."
