Man. I saw an image of Vera and immediately felt the riggings of going minorly insane tugging on my psyche again. I'm so excited for monprom 4

Oz Doesn’t Need to Eat—which isn’t that hard to imagine, really. For a monster that’s essentially an abstract concept (an “embodiment of fear”), needing physical food would be way weirder. Besides, at Spooky High, plenty of students don’t really need to eat, which makes the cafeteria feel more like a symbolic decoration than a functional space. Okay, maybe that’s just the non-eating agenda talking, there are still guys like Scott the werewolf who regularly tear through meals in the cafeteria like it’s his personal buffet. Maybe he’s eating enough for all the non-eaters combined.
But Oz isn’t completely ignoring the laws of thermodynamics, either. They actually feed on the fear of the monsters around them. I know, that sounds like some evil villain origin story, but hey, this is Spooky High. Every monster has their own spooky thing. Oz doesn’t go out of their way to scare people, though—that shallow kind of fear feels gross to absorb, like junk food. They prefer the deeper, more layered kind of fear. Like… that quiet dread of being called on by the teacher when you clearly didn’t do the reading. That kind of fear has way more flavor than something simple like being scared of spiders. That’s why Oz always sits next to the kids who are struggling in class during lessons (definitely not because they’re one of them, no sir).
And in turn, The monsters Oz feeds on usually end up feeling calmer somehow. That’s probably why everyone’s so comfortable around them!
Because of this, Oz can easily blend in at the Cool Kids’ lunch table (or are they just that easy to overlook?). Surrounded by fellow non-eating peers, Oz doesn’t stand out as much. And they really like being around Liam… Is that romantic attraction? Oz isn’t sure. To be honest, fear is the only emotion they truly understand. It’s just that Liam constantly gives off these tiny, delicious crumbs of fear, and Oz loves sneaking a taste. If compare it to food, it’s like Pop Rocks in every flavor—addictive, irresistible stuff.
Unless Oz actually pries into someone's mind, they wouldn't know exactly what Liam is afraid of. But this particular brand of tasty fear is usually psychological or emotional in nature. From what Oz can tell, it tends to spike when Liam’s picking out filters for his food photos, drafting his posts, or when classmates start talking about topics he doesn’t quite get. And honestly? There’s always this low, constant hum of fear clinging to him. Oz loves it. They just… have to get a little closer to actually reach it…
“Oz…?” The purple-skinned vampire suddenly shifted his attention. “Whatever these things are on you—dark matter, or whatever—they’re getting all over my arm.”
Oz snapped out of it and realized their phobia tendrils had stretched out and wrapped themselves around Liam’s forearm, looking utterly besotted. “S-sorry!” Oz scrambled, yanking the tendrils back with one hand while using the other to shove their chair a few feet away with a force they’d never mustered in PE class. “They just… don’t always listen to me!” That was a lie, but Liam didn’t need to know that. “Er… sorry. I'm— I'm full, so… I'll just— bye.” That was true, but Liam would probably take it as a lie, since Oz’s plate was empty.
And so Oz fled the cafeteria in a fluster, phasing straight through Polly, only to knock her sunglasses clean off (Polly did it on purpose). “Hey! You owe me a new pair~!” Polly sang after them.
Liam was still holding up his phone, watching Oz’s retreating figure. Truth be told, as a vampire, Liam didn’t have body heat to begin with, so it wasn’t the cold touch that tipped him off. It was the sudden absence of that familiar knot of anxiety in his chest, replaced by this strange, warm sense of being wrapped in something soft. Following that feeling, his gaze landed on the little tendrils clinging to his arm… and Oz, leaning toward him, eyes closed, looking utterly content. They didn’t have a visible mouth, but Liam could swear they were smiling. The corner of his own mouth twitched up in response—until he caught Vera’s skeptical look from across the table, and reality came crashing back down.
Now that familiar, gripping unease returned to his chest. But Liam was used to it, so he went back to angling his untouched lunch for the perfect shot.
Having Oz around every now and then wasn’t so bad, he thought, just as he hit the shutter button.
lots of my own interpretations in this so please bear with me! If you like it, well, I'll be super happy hahaha
