There are two things I need when cooking out back: rocking tunes and something delicious in my glass. The latter was a splash of Scheid Vineyards’ 2016 estate-grown Petite Sirah from Monterey County’s Hames Valley appellation (known for wide diurnal swings). The wines ripe fruit character reflects the region’s daytime warmth and sunshine, while cooler evenings provide balance—allowing the sun-kissed berries to retain good natural acidity. Generous flavors of dark berry fruit and dried plum combine with vanilla-laced oak, cedar shavings, and a dusting of pepper in this full-bodied wine. The tannins are slightly tamed, building toward the spice-driven, lingering finish. Rock-solid sipper while smoking meat out back and even better with my pulled-pork dinner. Retails for $36 and only 311 cases produced. Metz Road 2017 Riverview Vineyard Chardonnay: This wine offers a pleasing combination of brightness and richness with touches of cream and sweet oak framing lifted notes of pear, citrus blossom, and spiced apple. It has a lovely texture, and is enjoyable with or without food.
