The evergreen conifer Pinus montezumae (Montezuma pine) from the Mexican mountains has long (15 - 25 cm) needles that are in bundles of 5, occasionally 4 or 6. These are variable in texture on different plants from being thick and spiky to soft and slender. This young tree has a waterfall of these wonderful needles.

The textural presence of Pinus montezumae 'Sheffield Park' (Montezuma pine) in the new tropical garden at RHS Wisley Garden, Surrey, is one of the few plants without a winter protection wrapping! This evergreen tree is a native to Central and South America and has needles in bundles of 5, these can grow up to 30cm long.
