Monument Cafe Quinoa Salad
Recently, I made a 4-day sojourn to Georgetown, Texas, where my parents have retired to their dream community. My initial purpose was to help them unpack and to see their new house and the surrounding Austin area. Of course, it turned into a foodie tour, but how could I help myself?
The Monument Cafe in Georgetown was our first stop, primarily because I was on a strict detox then, and they serve…

7 Questions with Lacee Sills
The series where GTFE Magazine sits down with the event makers and talk with them about their craft, their passion, and their event.
Lacee Sills is a folk singer/songwriter from Austin, Texas with a jazzy and unique sound. Her soothing techniques have invited her back to William Chris Winery, Pilot Knob Vineyard, Wake the Dead Coffee House, Monument Cafe, and Georgetown Winery multiple times. GTFE was able to sit down with Lacee and talk a little to her about her craft, her passion and her event.
GTFE: You describe yourself as an Indie Singer. What does that mean to you?
Lacee: For me it’s sort of a mix between jazz and folk. Indie music is forming its own generation, so I guess you could say my music is like the “new” folk. I will always love the traditional routes of 60s folk but If I had to pick an artist to distinguish myself it would be the simplicity of Iron & Wine and the voice of Priscilla Ahn.
GTFE: And you are also a songwriter...
Lacee: Yea, that is important to me because (with songwriting) there are no limits. You honestly get to write about anything you want to: it’s basically beautiful poetry that sends out a message to people or can take away your cares for a while. To be a part of something like that is exhilarating. I want to make people feel how I feel when I listen to music. I want them to see what I see.
GTFE: So why do gigs and not just be a Songwriter?
Lacee: The people. I can’t tell you how many interesting and friendly people I meet at a gig. They change everything when it comes to music. What’s different about is that you get to experience it all and you get to see what your audience likes. There’s just something about being in a room with people and an artist because I believe nothing brings people more together than the music. It brings back memories, smells, sights, and when you’ve let a person experience those things again, I feel like I’ve opened a new door for them.
GTFE: You have a diversity of instruments when you perform as well ...
Lacee: I love to challenge myself musically. It started with my guitar but I always want more. I love to experiment with new sounds along with my own crave of growth and change. There are so many different instruments from something as basic as a harmonica to simple as garbage being tossed around in a bag. Why waste the opportunity?
GTFE: What is your background musically?
Lacee: I’d lock myself in my room and listen to random cds hours on end because It took the anxiety away from me and made me feel things that were deeper than I ever knew I could feel. I’ve been trained classically ever since I was in elementary school but I will admit, I was one of those little girls singing and dancing along to Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys in my room. There was something about (music) that was so interesting and mysterious. I discovered my parent’s cds and realized there was more than pop music, this is when I started being interested in the arts, my mom asked me if I wanted to be in the school choir, I already loved to sing so I thought it would be a good idea so I was involved in choir every year I have been in school. When I was 14, I got a guitar for my Birthday. I took lessons for a while then I started to self-teach and haven’t stopped. I’ve recently taken piano and voice lessons to keep everything in shape.
GTFE: And you are originally from Georgetown, been away and now are moving back. Does that change things musically for you?
Lacee: I’ll probably get to play more shows in Georgetown, which is a good thing. Everyone knows Georgetown is such a close community so I think that helps a lot. The people and the places are huge influences in my writing; It’s where I’ve grown up, where I’ve learned the most about myself and some of the best things that have ever happened to me have happened here. I am to record a cd in a few months; not living in Austin it might be a little more difficult to find gigs that are not here in Georgetown, but that doesn't stop me! I cannot explain how determined I am for the visions in my head to become a reality.
GTFE: But in your music we can ... so tell people to expect with an evening of music with Lacee Sills? > Lacee performs tonight in Georgetown, TX at 7:00 PM at the Monument Garden
Lacee: A very relaxing evening, of course! From what I hear, I’m soothing. I usually play a various selection of originals and covers. I talk to my audience like they’re friends I’ve known forever, in other words, I’m very blunt. In a good way, that is. Sit back, maybe have a few laughs, and lend me your ears.
GTFE: Thanks for you time Lacee.
Lacee: Thanks so much for letting me be apart of this
