Catalan for beginners: free online course

UPF Idiomes - MOOC de català

If you would like to learn the basics of the Catalan language, the Pompeu Fabra University from Barcelona (Catalonia's capital city) is offering this online beginner's course for free!

The course is taught in English and is made for people with no prior knowledge of Catalan (A1.1 level). Everyone can join it, you can be from any country in the world and you don't need to be a university student. The course lasts an average of 15 hours which participants can complete at their own pace during 5 weeks (there are no schedules for classes, you can watch the videos and do the exercises whenever you want) and you'll have a professor from this university who will help you. When you've completed the course, you will also get an official certificate.

Registration is now open for the second edition of this course, which starts on January 26th.

Catalan for Beginners is an online Catalan course which aims to provide basic lexical and grammatical resources so that you can communicate in a variety of day-to-day situations. It is free, open to everyone and meant for any international students who will join a Catalan university or anyone who is interested in Catalan Language and culture. A professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra accompanies all participants to provide anything you might need and encourages participation. Over three weeks, you will gain a basic grounding in the Catalan language, but you will also acquire other knowledge. The course, by means of a fictional series and its characters, will allow you to immerse yourself in the heart of Barcelona. You’ll also learn a bit about Catalan cuisine, music and traditions. Because learning a language is much more than just understanding words; learning a language is opening a door to the world. As such, this is a course designed to learn Catalan while having fun.

Since I started uni I have always considered taking an additional online degree or even a few courses so I can continue learning what I actually want to learn.

But I have been so hesitant about it because I’m not sure it’s worth it so I’m afraid there won’t be enough reason for me to stay committed to it.

And I hate dropping commitments.

So did anyone try this? Is it possible along with full time studies and part time work?

Coucou le French side, je viens de voir que l'Inalco a actuellement 5 MOOCs ouverts : chinois, tchèque, arabe, hébreu, malgache. ce sont des cours pour grands débutants avec pour objectif d'être au niveau A1 du CECRL à la fin et d'en apprendre plus sur la culture. Il y a beaucoup de contenus culturels facultatifs.

Faire gaffe aux dates de fermeture des inscriptions, c'est gratuit (sauf si vous voulez le diplôme), et ayant fait celui de tchèque pendant le confinement, c'est bien foutu. Edit: Oh j'ai oublié de dire. Si vous avez pas le temps inscrivez-vous quand même, vous devriez pouvoir accéder au cours même après sa fermeture (ce que vous ne pourrez pas faire si vous ne vous y êtes pas inscrits), vous perdez la possibilité de poser des questions au profs, etc. mais les documents devraient rester accessibles. C'est valable pour beaucoup de MOOCs de la plate-forme.
