Wip Wednesday

thanks for the tag @sanguineerose! kind of a unique one. in the next chapter of Moon Trapped we've got the court singing a song just as a background activity. Did I have to write the song? absolutely not. Did I have to write it as an extended narrative poem in a rhyme and meter invented by jrr tolkien that i thought was cool but knew was exceptionally hard? no. but I did. fuck me.

...and it goes on like this for a dozen more verses. I just thought tolkien's was so beautiful and wanted to give it a shot. Now I am paying dearly for my hubris. i can't post the next chapter until it's finished, so i'm trying to get it done before sunday, even though I know most people aren't even going to read it. idk, hype me up people, this is dumb.

Anyway tolkien wrote two poems in this form. Errantry and Song of Earendil. It's written in quatrains with an ABCB rhyme scheme, but for each couplet, the last syllable of the first line rhymes with the fourth syllable of the second line. It's also written in iambic tetrameter. the words are arranged so that the emphasis naturally falls every second beat. For you music people, it's syncopated. And of course he throws in assonance and alliteration wherever he can. The overall effect is that it's got a very rhythmic quality.

With this chapter we're officially within my favorite part of the fic!! I know this fic is slower than Unsanctioned Match, where almost every single chapter hits like crazy, but I promise this one's just as crazy. We're getting into the crazy part with the arrival of a certain gentleman. Below the cut is a snippet for this chapter! It's a spoiler, so proceed with caution.

I know in Moon Trapped in the Pond's Surface that they mention Toji a couple of times, especially Megumi in the beginning.

But I was wondering if we will get more about Toji and Megumi’s background later in the fic? Or if you would maybe be willing to tell more of your thoughts on them in this au?

we'll get a little more info on toji later! i don't think we ever get to learn about his and megumi's relationship though, so i'll spill the beans! They weren't very close. Toji was something of a loose canon for the Zen'in. He was a younger prince, not very important as a kid, and not very promising either, so he got neglected a lot. But then he grew up and turned out to be their best fighter and military leader by a significant margin. Then they had to deal with the fact that they'd made him a black sheep. He married some woman they would never have approved of without permission, had a baby, lost the wife, and gave the baby up to the main branch of the family just so they'd leave him alone. they were always getting on his ass for his slovenly presentation, poor taste in women, duty to the family, just endless shame and guilting. Toji wasn't immune to it. He was a very unhappy man. With Megumi, the Zen'in were extremely strict. Megumi didn't realize this, but he was a bit of a hostage even in the Zen'in court, because they used Megumi as leverage over Toji. Should Toji ever desert then or fail them, Megumi would be the collateral. As disagreements with the Gojo court escalated, Toji spent more and more time on the border leading skirmishes and countering aggressive Gojo activity. He was so good at his job, his skill was a major factor in the Zen'in's decision to start open warfare at all. Whenever Toji did come to court, he stayed in Megumi's rooms, since he didn't have any of his own. They cohabitated awkwardly. It wasn't until Megumi's teen years, that they began to feel like they had a real relationship. He died when Megumi was sixteen. Megumi found his passing much harder to bear than he thought he would. His memory is a difficult one. He was a hard man to connect to, and a poor father, but he was miserable and under-socialized, so Megumi can't blame him too much. He wishes he could have gotten to know him better.

Good!! In any universe, Gojo is all fucked up about Geto. That's the only way it can be.

From the next chapter of Moon Trapped in the Pond's Surface, the Heian era-inspired goyuu omegaverse court drama

Arata draped a final white outer robe with a vermillion ceremonial brocade over Satoru’s shoulders and then moved over to the wardrobe.

Satoru shook the sleeves into place. “I think,” he murmured to Nanami, quiet enough to exclude Nitta from the conversation, at least in spirit, “I’d have a hard time accepting anyone into my life who didn’t go through the same things we did over the past five years.”

Nanami nodded. “I understand that, believe me,” he said. "Is that what Gojo-sama sees in Itadori-san? Someone who his excellency could, in theory, take to bed, who would touch his scars in a way he could stomach?”

Satoru was glad Nanami couldn’t see the way his eyes fluttered shut behind the veil.

“He is an alpha,” Nanami said. “Gojo-sama said so himself.”

Satoru made Itadori’s sharp mouth noise and turned to Nitta. “I’m bored, Nitta-san. Suggestions.” 

Nitta glanced at Nanami. “What about the second messenger that came this morning?”

“Oh?” Satoru swiveled back to Nanami, who scowled. From his sleeve, he removed folded note tied to a sprig of wisteria. Satoru stuck the flowers in Nitta’s hat and unfolded the lavender paper. The scent of a certain omega lady clung to it. Inside, familiar handwriting wrote:

The fearsome swordfish commander of swift currents finds himself at last back in a cool garden pond  beholden to the goldfish

Satoru grinned. “Meimei didn’t tell me she was coming. How rude of her.”
