The only one whom you could blame because you went to the Halloween party on your campus was your best friend who couldn't stop nudging you to join her and her boyfriend, Eunwoo. You definitely did not want to end up as a third wheel, so you immediately rejected their offer. However, Eunwoo said that he would bring along his friend who wouldn't say no for all the money in the world, so that's how you ended up in the huge hall of your university (which was still small for the number of people who came by) with your best friend, with Eunwoo and with Eunwoo's friend, Jinjin.
The couple dressed up as Kate and Leopold from the same titled movie, the perfect roles for these two. Jinjin came up with the idea of dressing up as a lightbulb but Eunwoo quickly reminded him that he would go with a group of friends, thus he shouldn't embarrass everyone around him, so Jinjin decided on a security guard instead. You had no idea what to dress up as, and you were sure that you wouldn't want a lot of people to recognize your costume anyway, so you opted for your favourite female character from a book you were sure half of the university haven't even heard of.
The four of you were having a little chit-chat before the couple decided to sign up for a literature quiz and left the hall to head for the assigned classroom. Even though Jinjin was sure a good company because he could talk about anything and he could definitely lighten up the mood, you slowly started to feel a headache creeping up on you, and it was something that made your stay quite uncomfortable.
"And you know there's that movie with that rainy scene..." Jinjin started (god knows how come he started talking about this) before he was cut off by an unfamiliar male voice.
"Y/n ~"
The voice cooed, the high and slightly shaky pitch giving him away; the stranger who was dressed up as Thor was clearly drunk, his cheeks crimson, his eyes like a cat's.
"Do I know you?" you asked, deadpanned, not quite believing your eyes. You exchanged a glance with Jinjin, but he merely shook his head. How the hell did this guy know you then? Though it wouldn't be a surprise if you did know him but didn't recognize him because he definitely dressed up well, he even wore a blonde wig, an armour and he had the trademark symbol of the God: the war-hammer called Mjolnir.
"You know me but you still don't know me," the guy exclaimed beamingly, but you were just more confused than ever before. However, before you had a chance to ask further questions, the boy put his hammer in front of his face as if he was holding a microphone and started singing an all too familiar song. "I drink too much cheap wine, gon' spill this heart of mine, spill this heart of mine, baby. I drink too much cheap wine, gon' say what's on my mind, say what's on my mind."
You couldn't believe that this guy was singing one of your favourite songs after getting to know that he knew who you were. This was a mere coincidence, wasn't it? This had to be. You didn’t know him, he definitely did not know you, he was probably just drunk and had mistaken you for someone else.
"Dude got a pretty good voice," Jinjin murmured under his nose, and you felt the need to smack him in the chest. How dare he joke around at a time like this?
"I'm sorry, but I don't know you, and if you want to spend some time with others while being drunk, I suggest you find someone else, not me," you tried to save yourself diplomatically, and you were ready to turn on your heel when his words caught you off-guard.
"Hey, don't go! I'm trying to confess to you, I'm just terrible at this whole dating thing," he exclaimed frantically, and he almost sounded like he was pleading. The word 'dating' was just the cherry on top, you felt like if he said another word, you would immediately faint on the spot. No one had ever asked you out, no one had ever confessed to you, so it should have been heartwarming that someone finally did. Except that it wasn’t actually the way you wanted a confession; you didn't exactly imagine your first confession to be by a guy who was drunk, dressed up as the mighty Thor and singing to his hammer like he was holding a microphone.
"Look," you started, sucking in a deep breath. You would never try to reject him in a hurtful way, but you couldn’t just put up with him if he was going to say nonsense for the rest of the night. "I appreciate your efforts, but I don't know you. You must be mistaken."
"No, I'm not," he opposed immediately, his firm voice striking you like lighting. You glanced at Jinjin who seemed just as confused as you were, and you could see from his posture that he was ready to fight the guy if he made any inappropriate moves. "You're a Literature major, you're one of the most hardworking people I know, your favourite band is The Vamps, you love dogs, your favourite latte flavour is vanilla-coconut and you have the prettiest smile ever," he counted the facts on his hands and if it hadn't been for the vanilla-coconut one, you would have said that anyone could have known something like this. That tiny information was the one that only a few people knew around you, and you didn't remember that you had ever told a guy directly that it was your favourite flavour. While it's true that you usually had a cup of the said latte with you when you had morning classes but the type wasn't indicated on the paper cup.
"Ah, he said that you have the prettiest smile ever!" Jinjin gushed as if he had been the one who had received the compliment. You shot him a dead glare, but he merely shrugged his shoulders. "What? I appreciate his efforts. At least you know that he's honest. People are the most honest when they are drunk," Jinjin pointed out as if it should have made you feel better. To be honest, the guy was cute with that little crooked smile on his mellow lips that was accompanied by his adorable eye smile. He was also keeping a safe distance, not seeming to make any inappropriate moves. He was also quite fit, the armour fitting his body well, his broad shoulders and masculine arms making him look like a real God, and he was also pleasantly tall. The warm brown of his orbs was probably the most beautiful shade you had ever seen, and you found it hard to look at anything else but his eyes.
"I'm-" You opened your mouth to tell him that he should introduce himself, so that you would know exactly why and since when did he know you, but he cut you off when he heard the DJ announces that it's midnight, so we should welcome the new day with Day6's Good Feeling.
The Thor guy literally facepalmed with his toy hammer when he heard the announcement. The pain must not have settled in because he was more shocked than physically in pain.
"Oh my gosh, I gotta go!" He yelled frantically, earning yet another confused glance from both you and Jinjin. You were about to ask him to say at least something about your relation to him, but he was so quick that he evaporated like he had never even been there, leaving only the memory of him and one of his shoes behind. Jinjin carefully picked up the latter and examined it as if it had been the first time he saw a shoe.
"Well, that was interesting," you murmured as if no one had been around you, but Jinjin was all too occupied with something else anyway.
"Awww, he said that you have the prettiest smile he's ever seen! How cute!" The guy put his hand over his heart, dramatically sighing after letting you know about his opinion. Of course he couldn't see the real problem here. Of course, he was focusing only on the fact that someone had confessed to you, not the fact that the Thor guy did it in a pretty unusual way.
"The only problem is that I have no idea who he is, and the only thing I know about him is that he dressed up as Thor."
"And left at midnight," Jinjin added with a nod, following your train of thoughts. The situation made your nerves frazzled and your headache even stronger. How could anything like this happen to you? You didn't keep a horde of secret crushes and admirers. It was absolutely unimaginable on your part as you weren't even a social butterfly, thus you didn't know a lot of people, let alone guys at the campus.
You both let out a sigh when you averted your eyes back to the dancefloor, and wondered how could you go after this mystery because it was definitely a real mystery.
You had no idea what to do with the few information you had regarding your mysterious guy and the shoe he had left behind. What were you supposed to do? What would an ordinary person do if they were in your shoes? (No pun intended.)
First and foremost, you wouldn't look for him on SNS and put the picture of his shoe on the social media platform just like your best friend had suggested. You were pretty sure he wouldn't present himself because he would be too embarrassed to do so. Secondly, you would definitely not try to put an announcement on the school board saying that you would like to talk to the guy who had confessed to you at the Halloween party while dressed up as Thor because chances are that you wouldn't be able to recognize him without his costume. Plus, you didn't want some crazy creeps to come up to you, indicating that they were the secret guy. So what would be the solution then?
Well, Jinjin had a fairly good idea.
"Well, you're not sure how he looks like without his costume, he probably doesn't go looking around for his shoe if he even remembers the night, so how about asking people to sing the song he had used to confess to you?" he suggested the week after the Halloween party, the four of you sitting in a cafe on the corner of your university.
You had been thinking of that guy ever since the party, and you started to lose hope that he would ever come up to you without being drunk. Of course, you didn't have a reason to contact him as you weren't even sure that you actually knew him. However, he left such an impression on you that you couldn't think about anything but to give him a chance to explain himself when he's sober. Plus, he didn't make anything to you to hate him. Not to mention that your best friend couldn't stop asking you about that mysterious Thor guy after Jinjin had told her what happened that night.
"That's actually not a bad idea," your best friend chirped in and sent you a knowing glance.
"How would we persuade people to sing for us, random people?" You raised an eyebrow in question, not too sure about the outcome of the plan. You didn’t like to use people, especially not for your own selfish purposes. You should just give up, you started to think.
"We can always lie." Jinjin shrugged his shoulders as if it was nothing but you weren’t too convinced by his idea.
"Like what? That we want to make a band?"
"Jinjin always wanted to form a band, right?" Eunwoo shot him a glance and his friend fervently nodded his head.
"Yeah, that's right," he agreed immediately and you had no idea if he was being sincere or not but at least he tried. You weren't so sure anyway that the mysterious guy would show up since him singing your favourite The Vamps song didn't have anything to do with his intention of becoming a singer. Maybe he didn't even know he had a good voice, or he didn't want to believe it (maybe he was actually a Troy Bolton-like I'm-singing-only-for-the-shower-head type of guy). Maybe he was already a part of a band. Maybe he wouldn't want to see you ever again after (cutely) embarrassing himself in front of you. You didn't have a problem with him being drunk (he wasn't neither the touchy, nor the rude kind of drunk person), but it definitely didn't help that he wasn't 100% conscious and 100% in control when he confessed to you.
Anyway, you had hell a lot of doubts and you weren't even sure that you wanted to do it but you decided that it was worth a try.
Your little group gave it a week to prepare for the audition, thus you spent this time wisely by making posters and putting flyers on every available vacant surface around the campus. Jinjin even arranged with the head of a student organization that he would notify everyone he could. The purpose of the audition was just as you had arranged before, Jinjin forming a band, and you purposefully let the applicants know beforehand that they can sing any song they want but they also have to sing the chorus from Cheap wine. Just for the Western vibes, the announcement read.
The closer you were to the date of the actual audition, the more nervous you felt. Would your mysterious guy come? Wouldn't he be too suspicious that the song choice had something to do with his confession from the Halloween party? Or did he even remember what he had done that night?
Needless to say, your nerves were already frazzled by the time the audition rolled by. Multiple questions had been going through your head during those days. Why did he decide to confess to you during the Halloween party? Was he that drunk? How long had he been knowing you? How long had he been wanting to confess to you? It was a mystery, a real mystery. This whole thing with this guy and that Halloween party was like a part of a fanfic you wouldn't like to read.
Anyway, you did what you were supposed to do, sitting through the whole audition with Jinjin, Eunwoo and your best friend. There were some pretty interesting cases, to say the least.
"Is it okay if I just rap the chorus from that English song?" a guy named Changbin asked, his question taking everyone aback. Though Jinjin was actually more passionate than amazed, so he gave in without giving it a second thought. You had never heard anyone rap so fast in your whole life. It was as if this guy hadn't even breathed while rapping. His skills were truly on another level.
"What if I just dance? I mean, you guys want an idol band or an instrumental band?" An overly passionate boy who stated that he preferred to be called Ten directed the question at the four of you after dancing his way into the room. You were not surprised at this point that people had such questions since no further information was stated on your announcement, but it was actually a good thing. Your mysterious guy would probably not try to dance or rap if he already knew the lyrics to the song.
"I couldn't get the hang of the song in the same tone, so I've arranged it a bit," Namjoon - the head of the student organization Jinjin had talked to - announced before he started singing the song with perfect English and a kind of R&B style. It would be an understatement to say that the four of you were equally dumbfounded by his talent. He did justice to the original song while creating something new in his own style, and it was nice to hear your favourite song in so many different versions. The Vamps would have been interested in them for sure.
Even though a lot of people came and the audition took longer than any of you would have expected, your mysterious boy didn't show up. You were sure you would recognize his voice, probably his eyes too, but none of the applicants were the ones you had been looking for. At least, Jinjin could see the line-up of wanna-be musicians and start a band just like he had imagined when he was younger.
"Hey, cheer up, Y/n!" Your best friend hollered when she noticed that you were awfully quiet while you were on your way back to the dorms, your thoughts going back to the same boy, to the same question all over again. Will you ever see him again? Or the one and only boy who had ever confessed to you will always stay just a memory?
"I'm okay, really." You shrugged as if the whole thing had left you unbothered when in fact this was the only thing you could think about, and it was sad considering the amount of exams ahead of you. You should be concentrating on your studies instead.
"He'll show up. I can feel it!" Your best friend tried her best to reassure you, but you let out a sigh in response.
"I hope so," you said as you looked at the scenery passing by, your bus going through the buzzing city. You didn’t know why you felt so under the weather for something that hadn’t even started, and you had no idea why you felt like you should have tried better to meet this guy. You started to feel like there was no use anyway and it didn’t change as time went by.
You slowly began to lose all hope that you would see your mysterious boy ever again. There was still no trace of him, not even online, let alone offline. At least Jinjin was happy with his new band made up by the ones who had applied and showcased their talent. At least something good came out of that week of preparing hard for the audition. At least you knew you did all you could within your power to give this guy a proper chance to confess to you after the Halloween party. You weren't sure though if it was a good thing that you didn’t see him ever since or a terrible one. Would he be a cute, gentle guy? Or would he be a total asshole? Who knew? It was almost as if you had seen his profile online, maybe even had a little chat with him but nothing too personal, nothing too real-life like.
It wasn't until you were in the library one day, did you actually find out who he was.
At first, it was just this guy humming to himself but the closer you were to him, the clearer he sounded, thus you could actually realise that it was him, it was really your mysterious guy. He was standing by a row of shelves, probably looking for a book while he was humming Cheap wine to himself and when he couldn't contain himself anymore, he started singing out loud until the librarian told him to be quiet. Then, he bowed a bit and let out a little giggle as he turned back to the shelf. You knew that it was him because you recognized his voice and even his little laugh! You would never be able to forget such things after that Halloween party.
Your heart was racing, your palms were sweating and your legs were going in his direction. You were obviously anxious, your whole body shivering from both excitement and the fear of disappointment, yet you decided to give it a try. You decided to be this cool, adventurous girl who would never say no to such a challenge, and you took a step closer to him. Then, another and another.
On the other hand, before you could actually reach your mysterious guy, another boy showed up by the end of the row and called for him.
“Hey, Moonbin! You coming?” The shorter guy asked with a wide smile, making the other quickly grab a book and join him by the end of the row, leaving you alone in the middle of the library more dumbfounded than ever in your life.
Just like that, your chance to speak to him was gone. Of course, you could have stopped him but you were too shocked and you felt like you would interrupt his conversation with his friend if you did so. On the other hand, you knew his name and it was more than enough information to start your research. Eunwoo was like a real agent, using all the filters on SNS to minimize the number of possible Moonbins who were actually your secret guy. You knew his name, you knew his university, and you knew now how he looked like, so you were good to go. It took you quite a while though to go through all Moonbins' profile until you finally found yours and to realize that Moonbin was his full name, not just a part of it. Well, at least you didn't scroll through The Moon Bin saying that this couldn't be his real name.
Then, came the next mishap. How would you approach him? How would you write to him, so that you wouldn't seem neither pushy, nor too nonchalant? You had no idea how it went between a male and a female, it was like a whole new world to you.
Yet, you were more adamant than ever, so you tried your best to overcome your anxiety and decided to write to him by simply the following:
"Hey, it's y/n. I don't know if you remember the night you confessed to me and sang Cheap wine to prove that you know me. Anyway, I don't know how you feel, maybe you are too embarrassed to talk to me, but I've thought that it's only fair if you can explain yourself when you're sober. Or maybe just to talk? Let me know if you are comfortable with it."
When you pressed the ‘send’ button, you could feel your heart picking up its pace. You looked up from your computer, shutting your eyes closed and letting out a long sigh. You didn’t know it could be so nerve-wrecking to write to somebody, you weren’t a social butterfly to begin with. So to write to the guy who had confessed to you dressed up as Thor and tried to impress you by singing Cheap Wine? Well, you wouldn’t have imagined it even if you had known yourself perfectly well.
You didn’t even need to wait long until you got his reply, and you put the plate full of pancakes in a safe distance from you, so you would neither choke on your food, nor break the plate while or after reading the message. Though his response wasn’t as bad as you had thought that it would be.
"Oh hey! I didn't want to upset you or anything. Honestly, I don't remember everything from that night. I think I've lost one of my shoes, too, I don't know. I remember singing and talking to you but I don't remember the rest. I didn't want to contact you because I had no idea if I did or said something inappropriate. Tell me, did I? Back to your question, if YOU are comfortable with it, we can meet up, but only if you don't feel like you are compelled to do so."
You couldn’t help but laugh at the part when he mentioned he had lost one of his shoes. Well, you could tell him about that, you still had it in your dorm room as you had no idea where else to put it. Of course, your best friend couldn’t stop teasing you about Moonbin’s shoes, but what else you were supposed to do? Maybe you would be able to give it back to him if you could finally meet up.
You quickly wrote back to him, hoping that he would reply equally soon.
"It's okay, you didn't say or do anything inappropriate. I was just surprised and didn't know what to do with the situation."
You decided to be as honest with him as possible since you didn’t want to make him even more embarrassed. Maybe he was too shy to come up to you but liquid courage got him to do so, and you could only imagine his embarrassment now. You didn’t want to make him feel even worse, he seemed genuine by his messages so far.
"Same here.”
You didn’t know why you actually smiled at his honesty but there was just something about this whole situation; about this awkwardness that you both shared. You were both in this together, right? Needless to say, you were actually grateful when Moonbin was the one who wrote next.
“Okay, then let's meet up at the Fantagio Café on the corner of the uni. Friday afternoon is okay with you?"
Even though you saw it coming, after all this was why you had written to him in the first place, his suggestion still took you aback for a second. Then, you realized that it was definitely not going to be a date, he would have said if it was, so you immediately shut up the voice in your head that wanted nothing but to freak you out.
"Yes, it's perfect. Maybe at 5PM?"
"5PM it is then."
You stared at the screen of your laptop for a whole minute before you shook your head and reminded yourself that it was nothing you should be worked up about. It was just a mere encounter with the boy whom you had been searching for during the past weeks. He deserved to be given another chance. It would be just a mere conversation over some coffee, wouldn’t it?
Nevertheless, you couldn’t shake off this fuzzy feeling, and the closer Friday was, the more anxious you were. You didn’t even know what you were supposed to be doing? Would he be there first or would you be there first? Would you need to text him beforehand? Or was it now all settled? You had no idea how things like these worked but your best friend was kind enough to reassure you that you were going to be just fine, and if Moonbin happened to be a douchebag, you just have to give her a call and she would be there in no time.
With this thought in mind, you made your way to the Fantagio Café on Friday after your last lecture for the day, and you were pleasantly surprised to find Moonbin already there, waving at you from a table by the windows. He was in an adorable beige knitted sweater that made him look almost otherworldly in the late afternoon’s dim lights.
“Hey,” he greeted you with that adorable eye-smile of his, and your stomach immediately took a huge turn.
“Hi.” You tried to direct a friendly smile at him as you took a seat on the opposite side of the table. You swore you could feel awkwardness floating around you, yet Moonbin didn’t seem to mind the atmosphere. His smile was just as genuine as on the night you met (maybe a bit less drunk but he was still adorable), and his eyes were shining just as fondly. He ruffled his sandy-brown hair when he caught sight of your gaze on him, his moves effortlessly elegant and confident.
“How was your day?” he inquired with a hidden smile in the corner of his lips as he put down his elbows on the table. He was as casual as if you had known each other for years, so you’ve tried to do the same.
“It was alright. A bit tiring, especially my last class because the lecturer is so boring, no one actually pays attention to him, but you are obligated to be there nevertheless,” you rumbled and let out a nervous laughter when you saw his amused expression.
“Oh tell me about it! I have those classes too.” He joined in and laughed along with you. That’s basically how you started talking about annoying professors and useless lectures, moving on to other parts of uni life, interests, family stories, friendship stories and everything that came to your mind.
Then, he also blurted out that you two attended a class together during first semester, and he sat right behind you, so he actually got to know a lot about you while you were talking with your best friend and he didn’t talk to anyone else. He also cutely added that you had been just gushing about Cheap wine to your friend when the song had come out, and it’d become one of his favourite songs, too. He’d never been confident singing in English before, but he had planned to sing you a snippet of it excluding the drunk part. He hadn’t wanted to get drunk, and he made that very clear when the topic of the Halloween party came up. He also confessed that he had left at midnight because he was supposed to babysit his uncle’s son (who was 6 years old, old enough to go to bed by the time Moonbin left but he left him with his friend Rocky who was awesome with kids), yet he’d had to go back by midnight because his uncle would have come back from a theater play with his wife. Luckily, he had gotten back in time and had found both Rocky and the little boy sleeping on the couch, so he’d joined them. He had been also too exhausted from all the hustle-bustle and the amount of alcohol from that night.
Overall, you could really see that he didn’t have bad intentions, and he was actually a very sweet guy. He could talk a lot, but he listened attentively to you whenever you started telling him something, and he didn’t cut you off. He could joke around like you had been best friends for ages, yet he could also be serious at times. Talking to him was like breathing in some fresh air, it calmed your frazzled nerves and made you hopeful. For what? You couldn’t quite put a finger on it at first. However, the more time you spent together with him, the more you loved seeing that adorable eye smile of his, the more you caught yourself daydreaming about his beautiful eyes and the more obvious your feelings were.
Of course, your best friend, her boyfriend and Jinjin couldn’t stop teasing you about the guy who had drunkenly confessed to you, singing Cheap wine and being dressed up as Thor. Surely, it had been one very interesting way to meet someone. To meet a boy whom you happened to like back as time went by. It just seemed right no matter how awkward your first encounter had been. You didn’t click immediately with Moonbin, but you were always looking forward to your Friday rumble and coffee sessions at the Fantagio Café, your random visits to his favourite bubble tea shop, the times he accompanied you when you went to the university’s library, the songs you had exchanged after you realized that you had slightly different tastes, the books you had recommended each other, the silly animal vines he had sent you after you had accepted his friend request online, and the numerous times he made you laugh with a trivial joke of his or an honest smile of his.
Things were looking up for the both of you, and you didn’t even mind how you two had met. Not even a bit. He had spilled his heart for you and you gladly took it.
