Day 203:
Want to add some mystique to your life? Moonjock is you ticket. The opening song on Centipede Hz, this song starts with assorted voices to a time signature that's hard to wrap your hand around but still arouses your interest. As always, the vocal melody is beautiful and compliments the song well, especially during the chorus. I can't really grasp the meaning of this song, but it does seem to be reminiscing about youth. I still like the lyrics though. The bridge of the song changes the time signature and therefore the rhythm, and it's weird. It makes up for this with the ending, however, where a burst of energy does come out and the vocal melody really shines. Overall, as with the songs over the last 4 days, I have a soft spot for Moonjock, mainly for its vocal melody. Check it out.
And then in the nighttime you'll sleep. WHAT?!?
what's centipede hz? sounds scary!
Centipede Hz is an album by Animal Collective, it's actually p cool but something about the instrumentation just induces this upset stomach feeling. It sucks because I'm getting to like it a lot
Here's where you can sit through the visual album. Be warned, it's really weird and wacky so you may not enjoy it. Have a great day anon!
I have to see Animal Collective live.
"Mercury Man"
Sounds like machines talking to me on the phone. I say, but they don't quite get me. It's hard to make my feelings known. Sometimes I wish for a long wave. When I'm waiting for someone to calm my tone, bad vibes I've got hold dementia. When I'm one thousand Hz from home, sometimes I wish for a short wave home. Two human beings. I'm upset, you're upset, what's to be done? Old lines. Everybody talking from their homes. Bad news, but your bed will take you. If you could only feel what's wrong. Sometimes I wish for a hand wave home. Two human beings. I'm upset, you're upset, what's to be done? Two human beings. What a mess, what a mess, what's to be done? You got to slide it off like mercury. Can I play my part like mercury? Would you let me feel like mercury? Can I always be like mercury? You got to slide it off like mercury. Let it slip like mercury. Would you let me feel like mercury? Can I always feel like mercury? We must be somewhere, Can't find it nowhere, the love. Is it me? I keep calling, it feels like there's no one here.
With the twitchy, and completely out-of-place noises at the beginning, it's probably easy to dismiss "Mercury Man" as simply late-album filler, and save for the lyrics, the song almost is.
The song is Avey's emotional peak on an album where he really doesn't do a whole lot of genuine soul-searching. Sure, he touches on some childhood moments on "Moonjock," he does his usual existential routine on "Father Time" and "Applesauce," but he finally gets personal on "Mercury Man," which really makes the song a sleeper as far as this record goes.
The song is sort of a follow-up on Avey's personal life, which affected the latter part of his music. His relationship with Kria Brekkan was a huge influence on the lovestruck ballads of Feels, the promise of marriage and a family on "Cuckoo Cuckoo", the tattered and heartbroken mess that his marriage left him on "Bluish," and now perhaps a sense of acceptance on "Mercury Man."
Two human beings. I'm upset, you're upset, what's to be done? is a gorgeous line, and delivered with such devastating effect.
The word 'mercury' here refers to the element, although the idea of Mercury the planet seems to appropriately reflect Avey's cold aloneness and isolation after his breakup. Actually, the sense of helplessness here sounds really similar to two other classic songs "Rocket Man" by Elton John and "Space Oddity" by David Bowie, both of which are about loneliness and separation. Even though the lyrics suggest that mercury in this case refers to the element, the connection to both the sound and substance of these two classic songs is impossible to ignore.
