Zander is a direct descendent of the original cavemen who possessed the werewolf gene. He, by birth, is an Original werewolf, meaning that he was born with the gene instead of bitten. This enables him to, like a hybrid, turn at will and refrain from turning on the full moon, though he sometimes can’t help but turn. His transformation isn’t as painful, and as he describes it, it’s as if the moon sings to him and if he doesn’t turn the song gets louder and louder until he can no longer restrain it. It’s a very freeing thing for him.

Zander is making an appearance in Mystic Falls because of the High Wolf Council. They have asked him to step in and investigate the high level of supernatural activity there as of late—Original vampires, powerful witches, doppelgangers, werewolves, and hybrids. He is also there to look into the rumor that Silas is going to be resurrected. They all know the legend and they are wisely fearful of the immortal being. Zander is to stop this resurrection. Zander is a very kind, noble, and caring soul; so stopping things becomes a problem when he meets the lovely young Bonnie McCullough—the witch who is to raise him.

He likes Bonnie McCullough.
