22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed?

What makes me proud is also what makes me ashamed. I love how we can be so welcoming and curious and excited about learning new things and new cultures, I love how engaging and interesting/interested the people I meet are.... unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone and the deeply rooted and rising xenophobia and racism that’s taking over public discussion is making me deeply ashamed. You can’t turn on the TV or the radio without having to hear some straight white middle aged christian dude talking about muslim women nowadays and it’s driving me up the walls. Laïcité means spearating state from religion, it doesn’t mean trying to eradicate religion from public spaces because it’s not yours. ugh
