Moosham Castle
Near Salzburg, Austria lies a castle with a terrifying and gruesome past. Moosham Castle, otherwise known as The Witches Castle, was built in the 13th century by the Prince Bishops of Salzburg. For several generations there were many battles and wars around the area. Between 1191 and 1675, there were at least 45 battles around Moosham Castle, soaking the surrounding land in the blood of fallen soldiers. In 1675, the area was gripped in fear that witches walked among them. 130 men and 26 women were accused and condemned of witchcraft. The youngest victim was ten years old, his only crime was being a homeless orphan. The victims were tortured and murdered either through hanging or decapitation. The ones that survived were branded or had their hands cut off.
If that wasn’t enough, in the 1800s deer and cattle were found dead and mutilated, leaving the villagers to believe that there was a werewolf. It is said, that the werewolves were found and tortured at the castle, today some claim to still hear the growls of the werewolves that were thrown in the dungeons and killed.
Today many staff and visitors claim to have been touched by an unseen force. Many have also heard banging sounds and phantom footsteps. Others have seen white mists wandering about the castle. In a room called, “The Room of Tony”, where the man responsible for the witch trails resided. People claim to feel a dark presence within the room. In the torture chamber, visitors have felt unseen hands touch their hair and legs. Several EVPs were recorded throughout the castle. If you dare, you could even stay the night at the castle.
What do you think? Do you think it’s haunted by the spirits of the accused witches or perhaps even a werewolf or two?

Let's Get Haunted! Episode 87: The Witches, Ghosts, and Werewolves of Moosham Castle
Happy first episode of Spooky Season! This week, Aly tells Nat all about the most blood-soaked building in all of Austria: Moosham Castle. Built into a mountain in the forested countryside of Unternberg, this medieval spur castle has been the site of at least 45 battles between 1191 and 1675, including the infamously brutal German Peasants' War. If the bloodshed from multiple wars wasn't haunted enough for you, Moosham Castle was also the location of the imprisonment, trial, torture, and execution of the victims of the Zaubererjackl Witch Trials of 1681. These witch trials are set apart in history due to the demographic of its victims: 109 villagers were executed in just one year, with the majority being children and men. Following the witch trials, werewolf trials were held in this same area, leading to the execution and torture of even more men. Today, the castle has been preserved by a private buyer and remains open to the public as a piece of historical architecture; the torture room still intact with the original tools and instruments used against the werewolves and witches of Austria. Reports of ghostly apparitions and anguished screams still haunt the castle grounds, are you brave enough to step inside?
