Is the Book of Psalms Obsolete?
Is the Book of Psalms Obsolete?
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. –Psalm 51:1 ESV David wrote about his experience with sin and his discovery of important moral truths nearly three thousand years ago. What would Bernard Black do?
Okay the Law doesn't save us... but...
Shouldn't we look to it as a moral guide?
We're dead to the law (Gal. 2:19, Rom. 7:4)
We're not under the law (Rom. 6:14)
We're free from the law (Rom. 6:7)
We're not supervised by the law (Gal. 3:25)
We don't serve in the old way of the law (Rom. 7:6)
We can live in newness and freedom of the Spirit (Rom. 7:6, Gal. 5:13)
Don't forget the Law defines sin in more than 600 ways. No picking and choosing; you have to follow every one.
Paul says NO. "But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law." (Gal 5:18)
Most Christians try hard to follow the rules in the Bible. Paul called the Galatians 'foolish' for using the law as a daily guide after salvation. (Gal. 3:1-3) He got quite harsh with them actually... said it was like spiritual adultery.
Why was Paul so worried about them returning to the law and feel the need to warn them so explicitly? Because humans are suckers for religion.
