I love our fandom and our discussions on questions of morality and ethics, in the show as well as in fics.
Sometimes it makes me laugh, though. Because I know people in other fandoms (HP for example) and over there, people forgive characters who are literal mass murderers while some people in the YR fandom think that Simon cannot forgive Sara or August cannot be redeemed.
A character should have both strengths and weaknesses. That’s good and everything, but things get even more interesting when a trait is both a strength and a weakness.
Character traits shine when treated as neutral. Plot happens when we show characters finding ways to make their weaknesses into strengths (or the other way around).
Remove the mentality that a trait is inherently good or bad. Loyalty is good, but what if a character is loyal to the antagonist? Courage is good, but what if a character is courageous in doing heinous acts?
Character traits are only that, a trait. What characters choose to achieve with them is something else entirely.
“There are no good or bad people, just good and bad actions.” I understand where this is coming from, but I have a different idea. Morals VS Ethics can coexist.
Sometimes someone has the intent to be a good guy, but does terrible things. I’d call that being misguided. It’s reversed for people that assume they are the worst person ever, but do very supportive actions. I’d call that being insecure.
Also, there are neutral parties like me, people who either assumes they’re the worst or best, and don’t do anything to prove they are or aren’t.
I don't necesarily want people's ethics to be cohesive, but I want people to be able to notice/recognise when their own ethical positions are in conflict with each other.
Ethics as a field is as far from settled as any other part of philosophy, so it honestly is unusual to find someone who embodies an ethical position perfectly, and they tend to be more controversial, rather than less than your average human.
I encourage you, when you come across someone who seems to take positions that are extremely contrary to your own, to pause and wonder about what lead them to those positions without assuming that they are in any way dilluded, inherently evil or lacking in morals, or participating in an alternate reality from your own.
"forsake their humanity to live a life of morality"
Moralizing, to apply morals, is intellectualizing that which you sense in your gut-instincts and reactions.
Intellectualizing is similar to bypassing the act of feeling your feelings. You are practicing disassociation from experiencing your emotions. (this obvious no bueno. as it leads to repression, depression, etc)
Ethics and Morals are subjective. Many moral beliefs vary from person to person, culture to culture, religion to religion - many have been found to be universal, stemming from basic human emotions.
//Lets change the way we view feelings/emotions//
Feelings are here to tell me what I need.
Not tell me who I am.
My feelings make requests.
Not declarations. (of how someone should live their life according to morals.)
The question is then, how will living a life of morality bring me fulfillment?

Going a bit further: morals applied
1. I wish I had lived a life true to myself instead of the one others expected of me.
***living a life of morality could lead to a life that others expect of you.***
2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.
***scenario: told that working hard shows character and grit.***
3. I wish I had the courage to express my feelings.
***scenario: scared to express how they really feel because their feelings, thoughts, opinions were deemed immoral or sinful**
4. I wish I stayed in touch with my friends.
***scenario: distanced from friends who were not living life according to your morals.***
5. I wish I let myself be happier.
***scenario: your thoughts, feelings and emotions are dismissed because they do not live up to the standard of morality and ethics.***
If we live without morals then what will center us, humans?
Focusing on the feelings. Focusing on being present, within the body. Building emotional intelligence and emotional awareness. Leading with love, gentleness, kindness and reverence for all living beings. Working on becoming safe within your body so you can be a safe space for your own inner child, inner teen and others.
If we must put a name to then it would closely resemble humanist.
Humanism: centers human interests, values, and dignity, emphasizes reason, inquiry, human fulfillment in the natural world.
