everyone's like "oh, oh, theyre making morbius 2 the memeing went too far" no. let them make it. let them pour millions of dollars in it. let them purchase the most exquisite cgi sets and cameras and lighting and let it fucking bomb in box office. make it the worst recorded in proportion to how much was spent vs how many people went to see it. and keep joking about it. make it a movie everyone knows of but has never seen and never will see and let the directors go to bed at night with the stinging taste of failure.
I already reviewed Morbius 1 but The People have asked for me to review Morbius 2, so I am back
Before you read, here is a link to my original Morbius review, which you can consider pretty much required to understand this post: https://www.tumblr.com/lightning-witch-jenny/713165142020505600/so-almost-one-year-ago-i-made-a-gag-morbius?source=share
Hey hey hey #Morbheads. After over a year, Morbius 2: Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne World is out, so you already know I had to return to review the next entry in the #MorbCU. Let's reignite the #MorbiusSweep hype train and get this show on the road
We start off the movie to see Morbius is having a beach day with Minimorb and Megamorb. He wonders what ever happened to Suib Rom after he was defeated last time, when suddenly, Metal Morbius Mk II appears, carrying an injured Suib Rom. Morbius is shocked and infuriated that his beach day is already ruined 2 minutes into the movie, when Suib Rom says that he needs Morbius' help, as he has made a grave mistake. Morbius is having none of it and tells him to fuck off and just be happy he isn't morbing on him, so Suib Rom tells Metal Morbius to take him away from Morbius so they can find the help of superior allies. But as he's leaving he asks why Morbius, a vampire, is not burning in the sun
Instantly Morbius catches on fire and has to run under an umbrella. Enraged, he grabs the umbrella out of the sand and decides he'll go to the local McDonalds (this movie is also sponsored) to calm his nerves with some of his favorite food, McDonalds Fries. As he walks, Minimorb pulls out some sunscreen and tells him to not forget to apply it next time they go outside in daylight. Morbius stops to at least cover his face so the sun won't hurt him too much, and almost as soon as he's done, the hairs on the back of Morbius' neck raise, and he instantly jumps away, and just in time, as a laser blast hits where he was standing. However, as he lands, he's hit with two punches to the face.
As Morbius prepares himself, he is face to face with his attackers, Syn Shenron, and Dame Da Ne Guy, aka Kiryu. Morbius asks who the hell they are, and Syn Shenron introduces themselves to him, and says that they know he would interfere with their plans, so they're here to destroy him. Morbius scoffs, says his catchphrase #ItsMorbinTime and goes in to attack, finding he isn't able to totally morb on Kiryu, as he matches him blow for blow. As he fights, Syn Shenron laughs, and says that once Morbius is out of the way, nothing will stop them from creating the ultimate theme park, Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne World. Morbius jumps up and tries to throw a mighty punch at Syn Shenron, who catches his hand and laughs, before throwing him up, teleporting above him, and punching him down into the pavement.
Minimorb and Megamorb attempt to charge in to save their boss, but Kiryu just grabs them by their necks and holds them in the air as they flail, and Syn Shenron prepares an energy blast to fire at Morbius, when suddenly something hits Syn Shenron out of nowhere, strikes Kiryu from behind before he can react, then snatches up Morbius and his sidekicks before flying off. Morbius quickly realizes he's been rescued by Metal Morbius, who flies them back to the Morb Mansion, where Suib Rom waits at the gate.
Morbius is pretty upset he had to be saved by his arch nemesis and his robot double, but begrudgingly agrees to work with Suib Rom to defeat Syn Shenron and Dame Da Ne Guy.
The must faster paced opening compared to the original is quite an interesting choice I think. I'm not sure if it's better or worse than the slower opening of Morbius 1, both have their pros and cons after all. Anyway, back to the summary
Suib Rom admits that he summoned Kiryu and Syn Shenron from the Otherworld to get their help to defeat Morbius, but they instantly turned on him, and while he hates Morbius for bullying him in the second grade, he knows Morbius is his best shot at stopping them. Morbius is ticked off that this is all Suib Rom's fault, but decides that in the end its better to truce in order to defeat such a powerful pair of enemies than argue. Suib Rom explains that their ultimate plan is to awaken the legendary Pokemon Kyogre and Groudon so they can reshape the planet into the perfect place to build their theme park Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne World, and thus they should go get the Red and Blue orbs before Syn Shenron and Kiryu do so their plan is foiled.
So they all head off to Mt. Everest, the sacred resting place of the Red and Blue orbs, and the second highest place on earth. After reaching the shrine at the top of the mountain, Morbius reaches out to grab the orbs, but is blindsided by a punch, as he realizes Kiryu Dame Da Ne Guy has arrived at the same time, and has grabbed the Blue Orb. Kiryu quickly realizes he is outnumbered and wouldnt be able to fight all of them at once, so he flees the scene. Metal Morbius goes to chase after him, but Suib Rom tells it to stay in case luring them away is what Kiryu wants.
Suib Rom grabs the Red Orb and says if memory serves him correctly the Red Orb will enrage Groudon and sent it into a primal state, but will allow you to control Kyogre. Morbius admits he doesn't know much about the legendary trio, so he goes along with that. Suib Rom then says that Kyogre's resting place is at the bottom of the Marina Trench
They go to California where Suib Rom leads them back to his subway lair. He says he detests showing Morbius the location of his hideout but it's where his submarine is, so he has no choice. They take the submarine down to the seafloor cavern deep in the Marina trench.
The sub pulls up into the cave, filled with air allowing them to exit, and come face to face with the sleeping Kyogre, resting in a pool of water. Suib Rom holds the Red Orb up to it and commands it to serve his will, but Kyogre awakens in a rage, and immediately attacks with Hydro Pump, which Metal Morbius jumps in to take the hit of. Morbius shouts in a rage that Suib Rom used the wrong orb, and Suib Rom admits that with hindsight it seems obvious that the color would match the legendary. Kyogre uses Thunder to attack Morbius, but Minimorb and Megamorb jump in the way, and, being gargoyles, they are actually rock/ground types, making them immune to thunder. The fight continues and it seems to be going poorly, and Morbius is forced to use his Chaos Emerald to power up and actually stand a chance. But just as it seems like Morbius might be able to win, from the exit of the cave, Syn Shenron bursts from the water, Blue Orb in hand. Immediately, Kyogre's onslaught stops, as it waits for orders. Syn Shenron laughs and decides to simply fire a blast at the roof of the cavern, causing it to begin to collapse as the water rushes in. Syn Shenron continues to laugh madly as Morbius and co black out
This seems like a good point to pause and give my thoughts so far. I've loved a lot of the banter between Morbius and Suib Rom, although I've had to leave much of it out of the summary. And Syn Shenron and Kiryu Dame Da Ne make for some threatening antagonists, far more so than Suib Rom and Metal Morbius before them, which was a high bar to clear. With that being said, back to the movie.
After the screen goes black, we get a flashback of Morbius as a child in Transylvania, where Dracula tells him that it is his destiny to move to America, where he can use his mighty powers to own the homophobes and prove once and for all that straight vampires are cringe. Minor spoiler but this scene is not relevant to anything else in the movie so I feel like it might be setting up for a later movie or something.
When Morbius and Co awake they discover they have been carried out of the water by egg-shaped robots. Morbius looks to the sky to discover the Death Egg, but rusted scrap metal has been placed over it sloppily to make it look like Parallel Meta Knight's mask. Morbius smiles, as he realizes his ally has come to his rescue.
The egg-robots take Morbius and Co aboard the ship, and Parallel Meta Knight is there waiting for them. He exclaims how good it is to see Morbius again, and welcomes them aboard his new ship, the Parallel Meta Egg. As they all get up, egg-bots immediately surround Suib Rom and Metal Morbius. Morbius tells PMK that they have a temporary allience, so PMK calls off the bots, and takes them all to the command deck of the Parallel Meta Egg. Morbius asks how he got all this, and PMK explains that he had his own adventure where Dr Eggman tried to take over his dimension, so PMK defeated him, and managed to claim the Death Egg as his own. PMK then turns to the camera and says the Parallel Meta Movie will be releasing soon. I'd seen some ads for that movie, so its not like this is the movie's first reveal, but it feels odd to have Morbius 2 take place after it but come out first? IDK.
PMK introduces Morb and co to his friends Parallel Dedede and Parallel Susie, although it becomes very clear PMK and P.Susie actually hate each other (are they exes?). After discussing their options they decide that if Syn Shenron and Dame Da Ne Guy have Kyogre, they have to combat it with its counterpart, Groudon, who is said to rest in Mt Fuji in Japan. With everything decided, PMK pilots the Parallel Meta Egg off to Japan
We then cut to Syn Shenron and Dame Da Ne Guy, who are overseeing construction of Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne World. Syn Shenron just could wait no more to have construction begin, which is apparently why they're starting before the actual terraforming begins. Kiryu asks Syn Shenron if he took care of Morbius and Suib Rom, who responds that he did so. Syn Shenron says he's also finalized the plans for the park's anti-Eclipse measures in the event they lose their Chaos Emerald. He then gazes back to Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne World, and claims that this will be his new legacy.
We cut back to Morbius and Co, who arrive at Mt Fuji. Morbius holds out the Red Orb, and from the top of the volcano, Groudon awakens. While it is under his control anyway, Morbius explains to the legendary Pokemon that its ancient enemy Kyogre is being wielded by his enemies, and thus such a team up benefits both of them.
Suddenly a bunch of missiles fly in and hit the Parallel Meta Egg, causing some of the scrap metal making up the mask to fall off. Soon, the Egg Carrier comes into view, and from its speakers, shouts the voice of Dr Eggman, who says he won't allow PMK to steal his egg and get away with it, before firing more missiles.
Morbius realizes the Egg Carrier must be a steel type, so ground is super effective. He commands Groudon to use Earthquake on the Egg Carrier, but nothing happens. Eggman laughs and explains that the Egg Carrier's held item is an Air Balloon, which causes the Egg Carrier to float in the air and become immune to Ground Type Moves. Sure enough, the camera zooms to the top of the Egg Carrier, revealing the entire thing is held in the air by a single Air Balloon. Groudon is useless against such a foe.
Suddenly, the Egg Carrier's Air Balloon is popped, sending it crashing down. It is revealed Reimu Hakurei popped the Air Balloon, and she urges them to escape while Eggman is busy trying to replace the Air Balloon. We cut to the Parallel Meta Egg, with Morbius and Groudon running into the command deck. PMK asks how Groudon even got in the Parallel Meta Egg, to which Morbius says there's no time and they have to get out of there before Eggman can fix the Egg Carrier. So they quickly fly off.
As Minimorb, Megamorb, Parallel Dedede, and Groudon play poker to pass the time, Morbius, Suib Rom, and PMK begin to form their plan. Suib Rom explains that he's found the enemy is building Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne World on the continent of Mu in the pacific ocean, which isn't too far from where they are. PMK says that since Groudon and Kyogre are an even match, they'll keep each other busy, which means they can all focus on Syn Shenron and Dame Da Ne Guy. Morbius says that with such powerful foes against them, they'll all have to go in together and swarm them, and they'll need all the help they can get, which is why he's wondering where his robotic doppelganger is. After he says that, Parallel Susie enters the room with an even further upgraded Metal Morbius, explaining that when it was brought in it had been rendered non-functional from water damage, but she repaired it and upgraded it to Metal Morbius H, using the latest Parallel Haltmann Works Company tech, and the leftovers Eggman left behind, and rather than simply wielding a Chaos Emerald as it had when Metal Morbius first fought Morbius, it was now directly using it as its power source. Suib Rom seems pleased with these upgrades, and says he looks forward to making use of them for a long time to come. As he says this he smirks at Morbius.
Soon they arrive at Mu, at the gates to Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne World. As the Parallel Meta Egg flies into the park, they spot a huge lake where Kyogre is resting in the center. They open up a hanger door on the Parallel Meta Egg, and Groudon jumps out to face its eternal nemesis, with Morbius and Co following behind. Syn Shenron and Dame Da Ne Guy soon show themselves. Syn Shenron laughs and says as the wielders of the Red and Blue Orbs, it seems fit he and Morbius settle things in a Pokemon battle, to which Morbius accepts. Groudon immediately uses Earthquake, but its not very effective on Kyogre. Syn Shenron then commands Kyogre to use Hydro Pump on Groudon, and its super effective. Suddenly everyone on Morbius' team freaks out, realizing they're at a huge disadvantage. Morbius shouts at Groudon asking how it even fought with Kyogre without getting instantly bodied, and Groudon just shrugs.
Syn Shenron commands Kyogre to start Calm Mind boosting up to prepare for the Ultimate Hydro Pump. In a panic everyone on Morbius' team attacks Kyogre at once to try and chip it down to defeat it, but even this breaking of Pokemon battle rules cannot stop the legendary Pokemon, who raises its special stats to the max, and prepares the Ultimate Hydro Pump. Groudon braces itself, ready for the worst and
The attack misses. Syn Shenron suddenly remembers that if a move is not 100% accurate it will always miss when you need it to hit most. Morbius and Co cheer, when suddenly Kiryu appears behind Morbius and roundhouse kicks him. The Red Orb flies out of his hands, which Kiryu grabs, and shouts to Groudon that it's time for it to baka mi work for the winning side now. Groudon, seeing Kiryu has the Red Orb, turns to Morbius, flips him off with both hands, and then runs to Kyogre's side. The two legendries glare at each other angrily, before turning back to Morbius and Co and preparing their attacks. PMK quickly calls to retreat, and they all scramble to dodge the various attacks as they make their way back to the Parallel Meta Egg and fly it out of there.
They all look down dejected and defeated. Until Parallel Dedede tells them all that there's no use moping, and there must be another way to defeat them. Suib Rom says that's right, and they just might be able to awaken the third Legendary Pokemon, Rayquaza, who lives at the top of the tallest structure in the world, the Tower of Babel. PMK admits since he's not from Earth he doesn't know much about this stuff but he thought the Tower of Babel was never finished because the workers were cursed to speak different languages, to which Suib Rom replies that the workers used Google Translate to communicate and actually built the tower 50% completed before Raquaza appeared and claimed the tower as its resting place, which is what actually halted construction.
So they fly the Parallel Meta Egg to the Tower of Babel, but as they reach the peak they discover the Egg Carrier, and exit onto the tower's top floor to discover in shock that Eggman has placed mechanical armor on Raquaza, giving him full control over it. Eggman flies in on the Egg Mobile, the first time in the film we actually get to see him, and he exclaims that he's decided to ally with Syn Shenron and Dame Da Ne Guy, since the enemy of his enemy is his friend, and now that he has control over Rayquaza, they will never be able to stop their plans. They all try to battle Rayquaza, but as with the previous two, the Legendary Pokemon is in a weight class not even the mighty Morbius can reach. In a bout of quick thinking, Suib Rom commands Metal Morbius to attack the Egg Mobile. Eggman is send crashing into the ground, his control over Rayquaza severed. Rayquaza, now free, easily shakes off the mechanical armor, and fires a Dragon Pulse at Eggman, sending him flying off and back onto the Egg Carrier. Rayquaza then stares at Morbius and Co, before flying off to Mu.
The heroes enter the Parallel Meta Egg and fly back to Mu as they prepare for the final battle. Morbius grips his Chaos Emerald in his hands, knowing he will need its power to even stand a chance. Suib Rom asks Morbius why it seems like he's been off his game recently, and Morbius says he's not sure. Suib Rom suggests that perhaps in his fame, Morbius has grown lazy, and maybe he should begin training more so he is not continuously outcompeted by every new foe. Morbius asks why Suib Rom would give advice to his enemy, and Suib Rom just laughs and says it would be boring if Metal Morbius H just one shot him the next time they fought.
As the Parallel Meta Egg flies back to Mu, they look down below and see the continents reshaping themselves, land and sea reforming to push all the 8 continents into one. As they arrived back at Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne World, they discovered it had been rebranded to Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne Eggman Land. Raquaza immediately flird down to do battle with its counterparts, and with them occupied, the heroes jumped out, certain this time their plan would work. They were face to face with Syn Shendron, Kiryu Dame Da Ne, and Eggman in the Big Arms Mech. Parallel Dedede and Megamorb went after Kiryu on a giant oversized Merry-Go-Round. Parallel Susie, Metal Morbius, and Minimorb go after Eggman at the base of a Ferris Wheel, and Morbius and PMK hop on a Roller Coaster to battle Syn Shenron. Suib Rom is not actually much of a fighter so he stays behind.
The fight against Kiryu goes pretty simply. While Parallel Dedede and Megamorb are initially disoriented by the spinning battlefield, they find their footing and Parallel Dedede knocks Kiryu away with a trip slide, who shouts "EEEYIKES! This might be the baka mi end of meeeeeeee!" as he is sent flying.
Minimorb, Parallel Susie, and Metal Morbius also struggle against the Big Arms, until they manage to defeat it by having Minimorb distract Eggman, allowing Metal Morbius to grab both its arms and use its maximum thrusters to hold them back, so Parallel Susie can use her mech's drill attack to pierce the cockpit of the Big Arms.
On the roller coaster, Morbius finds that his attacks are having no effect on Syn Shenron. Syn Shenron explains that before the fight began, he used an Ability Capsule to change his ability to his hidden ability, Wonder Barrier, which is like Wonder Guard where only super-effective moves can damage him, but unlike Wonder Guard the ability will deactivate if he is hit. As a Dragon Type he has very few weaknesses, so the fight has already been won, none of Morbius' attacks can harm him. Syn Shenron toys with the two as they battle on the rushing coaster. Morbius asks why Syn Shenron why he's doing all this, who decides that since they'll die soon anyway, he'll tell them his secret. He explains that he and many other dragons were born from the Dragon Balls as punishment for the abuse of their power, and he was born from Bulma's wish to have a bigger ass. He was so ashamed of his origin that he desperately wanted to have a legacy beyond that, so he teamed up with Kiryu so they could create Syn Shenron Dame Da Ne World. He then laughs as he looks around him, and says his dream is almost complete, and there is nothing they can do to stop him, they cannot even deal damage to him. As he continues to laugh, PMK's eye's seem to glisten. PMK exclaims that he is known as the Otherworldly Frost Blade for a reason, he is an ice type, super effective on dragon, and he was charging his ultimate move the whole time. He then unleashes his final attack on Syn Shenron, Otherworldly Frost Blade Ultimate: Frigid Blossom [Seven Slashes]. He unleashes a flurry of icy slashes on Syn Shenron, then tells Morbius that the Wonder Barrier is broken, and he's been weakened enough for Morbius to fight back. Morbius looks at the weakened Syn Shenron, says to himself "It's Morbin Time" and in a moment we were all waiting for, totally morbs on Syn Shenron, sending him flying as well. The Red and Blue Orbs fly out of his grip as he's send off, and Morbius catches them both. Instantly, the three legendary Pokemon stop their feud. Look at each other with some rage, before deciding to unleash it at the theme park instead.
On the ground, Kiryu helps Syn Shenron up, and tells him that with the park being destroyed, they have to go and secure the Chaos Emerald. But as they reach the generator room, they discover Eggman running off with the Emerald, too late for them to catch him.
With the park in ruins, the three legendary Pokemon leave to return to their resting places, and the heroes say their goodbyes. The Parallels take the Parallel Meta Egg with them as they return home to Another Dimension, and Suib Rom says that while he still has not forgiven Morbius for the torment he received in the second grade, he is at least glad he has a worthy rival. Morbius agrees, and they both walk off in opposite directions, their respective allies following behind them.
That would be where the movie ends, but as with Morbius 1, there is a post credits scene missed by many fake Morbheads.
Syn Shenron and Dame Da Ne Guy return to Suib Rom's subway lair before he was able to arrive there himself, and reactivate the portal, and return to their home of the Otherworld. Kiryu tells Syn Shenron that with the way things are going on Earth, it won't be long before their mishandling of the Chaos Emeralds triggers the Eclipse, to which Syn Shenron agrees, and decides it might be best they stay away from Earth for now. They then make out confirming to the audience that they are homosexual.
And that's the movie! My thoughts? A great time, but it falls a bit short compared to the original. Despite the longer run time, there was less focus on one cohesive character arc, and more focus on a whole cast of characters and their growing team dynamic, which has its own merits. And I loved the more complex and interesting plot and the villains somehow more intimidating than Metal Morbius, I don't know, I miss the simpler plot of Morbius 1. And I still don't know why they didn't release PMK's solo movie before this. That being said I give it a 9/10, only one point lower than Morbius 1. I'm still very excited to see how the Morbius Cinematic Universe continues from here, and even if this entry was outperformed by the original, it is still one of the best movies I have ever seen.
